ASSOCIATION CODE WESTERN’S UNBEATEN RECORD ENGLISH CUP FINAL Western A, by beating Thistle at Eng" lish Park on Saturday by 5 goals to 0, came through the’ season without defeat. The team has won the Hurley Shield for the local elub competition, the Chatham Cup for the New Zealand premier club team, and by the win on Saturday retained the English Cup.' * The ground -was in good order for a fast and interesting game. - Although only at time? ‘exciting, the game was keenly contested, the score by no means representing the difference betwen the teams. The Thistle forwards failed as a scoring machine, and in spite of numerous chances presented^by the half line in the first half, the foirwards were not dangerous round the goal-mouth. The Scots were unlucky with a “hands” soon after the game started, and although some fine equalising chances were offering soon afterwards, the forward line did not appear to have the necessary opportunists to cap these efforts. A. Wilson may perhaps be excepted In this*, but quite often this player’s idea of the direction of the goal wag at fault. Playing against a solid and determined back line, the Scots’ forwards seldom speculated. G. Clements, on the right wing, had an off day. invariably making little headway against McMillan and Roberts,

Both Adams and Bruce kept touch with the wing men more than the centre, the former playing some good individual football.

The Thistle halves tolled hard throughout, and had the bad luck to be feeding the less reseurceful vanguard. J, Simpson had an able recruit In A. Walker, a former Thistle and Canterbury half-back, playing at back with him. Walker gave a creditable display, and although at times a little Irregular, his defensive play was sound. J. Simpson, the Thistle left back, and R. Henderson, the Western right half, shared the honours for the match. A. Wilder, the Thistle custodian, gave an excellent exhibition of goal-keeping, making some almost Impossible saves. Western made little leeway in the first half against the Scots, but after the interval the Western forwards, backed by a capable and fit rearguard, made the pace and gradually wore their' opponents down.

W- Ives and G. Smith showed considerable dasq and possession of the ball near the opposing goalmouth, generally causing anxiety among the Scots* backs. The Western halves have developed into a vital unit of the Western team. No small measure fo the team’s success can be credited to them. Possibly the fittest trio in Canterbury, each member has beco,?e„a specialist in his own position, and for anticipating the trend of play they have no equals. Both Roberts and Cawtherav were sound, full-backs, and J, White, the goalkeeper, got through a fair amount of work in a capable manner. The teams were:—

Western A—J. White; S. Cawtheray, G. Roberts: R. Henderson, M. Gordon, A. McMillan: w. White, G, Ellis, G. Smith, W. Ives, E, Hall,

Thistle—A. Wilder; A. Walker. J. Simpson; J. Paton, D. Sutherland, W. Sutherland; G. Clements, R. Adam. J, Wilson, G. Bruce, and G. Walker. Western’s goals were scored bv W. White, Smith (3). and Gordon, Mr J. Carew was referee.

After the match Mrs J. -R. Hampton, the dauehter of the donor, the late Mr Robert English, presented the cup to the captain of the winners, Mr S. Cawtheray.
