ANOTHER SCHOOL WANTED
.. "■ y." POSITION AT TECHNICAL ■■ ■■ ■’COLLEGE • ■-/ COMPLAINTS ABOUT LACK OF , SPACE Although the new branch schobl of the Christchurch Technical College, was opened last Saturday at Papanui by the Minister for Education (the Hon. P. Fraser), members of the Board of Governors last evening urged the need for still further accommodation. The board was also asked to allow the buildings committee to approve of plans for additions to the main building, costing about £2OOO, and this was agreed to. Mr T. W. Wfest, the chairman of the board, explained that this money was to be spent on the entrance, providing better accommodation for the staff, and making more provisions for hats and coats. The book department of the school would also benefit in the proposed alterations. Mr West also said that the proposed alterations would not nearly meet the demands for space that the increased roll number demanded.
Mr J. Roberts: Do you mean that you want another branch school? “Another branch school will have to come in time, but we also need a lot more room in this main block,” replied Mr West. “Every now and then we put a bit on here and a on there, so that we now have a. collection of hotch-potch buildings without any uriifon *ity. We cannot encroach any further on the area we have now, as the children and students have hardly enough room to play in during their lunch hour as it is.” Eight Classrooms Needed “We need eight classrooms here as it is. We must get another school site, especially as there is a possibility of our having to train apprentices,” added Mr Roberts. ' “Spreydon and Linwood by themselves would fill another school quite easily, and we should look out for sites in either of these districts, in Spreydon for preference. “Four or five of the classrooms in this central block should be trapped,” he continued. “Some of them are iqore than 60 years old and are hardly fit for use. We have an increase of more than 200 on the roll now, as compared with this tim_ last year, and with another similar increase next year the 400 extra pupils would more than be enough to start the school,” he concluded. There was no further discussion.
