HALSWELL COUNTY COUNTY
FORTY-HOUR WEEK ADOPTED
A decision to adopt a 40-hour week with no work on Saturdays, as from September 1, was made at a recent meeting of the Halswell County Council. There were present: Crs. E. Paterson (in the chair), H. J, Macartney, W. Wilson, W. Gardiner, and J. Doyle. An apology for absence was received from Cr. Sharp. A cneque for £lO5 6s 4d was received from the Christchurch City Council as the balance of the county council’s share of the heavy traffic fees. , The Paparua County Council advised of its approval of the erection of a new bridge on the Christchurch-Akaroa main highway. A request that the'council convene a meeting of women to obtain subscriptions for a portrait of her Majesty Queen Mary, for the new National Gallery - was referred to the Halswell and Tai Tapu Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union for consideration. Accounts amounting to £361 3s were passed for payment Receipts for the month were £560 14s Bd. It Was decided to inspect Saddle road, Motukarara, before.. the next meeting. : ' ‘ ■- ■
