NEW SCHOOLROOMS
A start has been made with the building of three new, classrooms and a cloakroom at the Lyttelton District High School. The plans show that the rooms are of the same type as those at the Shirley Intermediate School, each room holding 40 pupils. When completed they will be used in place of three rooms on the. south side of the main building. Concern has been expressed by some of the school staff and committeemen because the new building will occupy fully one half of the boys’ playground, the remaining half being sunless in the winter time. It is not possible to hold games and drill in the small area of playground left, and use has had to be made of the children’s public playground on the old gaol site. Also the new building, being 18 feet in height, will cut off the sunfrom the girls’ playground in the winter months.
