AKAROA LAUNCH WRECKED

DRIVEN ON BOCKS BY SOUTHWESTERLY GALE The Akaroa launch Wainui was completely wrecked on Thursday night. The occupants, three young men, Messrs D. Pool, P. McGuire, and George Hillyer, escaped after a trying experience. They left Akaroa on Thursday morning in the launch,* the property of Mr Pool, sen., for a few days’ fishing outside the heads. Late In the afternoon a south-westerly gale sprang up, driving the launch on to the rocks at Island Bay, a few miles south of the heads, where it became a total wreck. After salving as touch as possible of the gear, two members of the party, McGuire and Hillyer, set out in the dinghy to find a landing place along the rock-bound coast. This they did at Scenery Nook, and then walked over the range to Walnul, where they arrived in the early morning, and telephoned the news to Akaroa Meanwhile Pool, who had been left at the scene of the wrack because the dinghy would bold only two, had a very trying experience, being exposed all night to the fury of the gale,' However, he was reached as soon as possible by his .uncle. Mr W, Pool, in another launch, and is reported to be suffering no ill effects.

The launch is an almost complete loss, though it is possible the engine may be salved.
