“A VERY PRESSING PROBLEM”
BELIEF OP DISTRESS AT NEW BRIGHTON “Without the assistance of the Mayor of Christchurch and the Metropolitan Relief Association, my own position would be intolerable,” said the Mayor of New Brighton (Mr E. L. Smith), in reporting upon relief of distress in the district to the borough council last evening. Mr Smith said that although the residents of the borough were not in a bad way, a difficult problem was created by people who arrived in the borough without money, and who came to him immediately lor help. “To cite an instance," said Mr Smith, “last Friday a woman arrived in the borpugh with five children, who had been starving for a day and a half. They had naturally to come to me for assistance,” The Mayor said that it was hoped that with the arrival of the summer the position would be relieved, but in the meantime the problem was a very pressing one, and he had several difficulties to face before he received the 1 next draft from art union profits.
