TURF GOSSIP Reminders Nominations for the Avondale Jockey Club’s spring meeting will close •am Friday at 5 p.m., at which time first forfeits are due for the Avondale Stakes, Champion Plate, Avondale Guineas, and the Nihotupu Plate. Acceptances for the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting will close on Tuesday next at 5 p.m. Answer to Correspondent “Enquirer.”—Dame Straitlace started 59 times in her racing career, and won five races. She was. placed on many occasions, the chief of which was in the New Zealand Cup, when she ran second, carrying 6-7, to Rouen, 8-5. Roseday, 8-9, was third. Dame Straitlace was beaten by a head. She began her career as a two-year old, and she had her last race when a six-year-old. Her successes were in the Spring Stakes, five furlongs. South Canterbury; Oxford Hack Handicap, six furlongs, North Canterbury; Kingsdown Welter Hack Handicap, one mile. South Canterbury; Coldstream Welter Handicap, one mile, Ashburton; and Kaikorai Handicap, one mile, Dunedin. The best of her progeny was Quite Soon, a useful winner, while she also produced Mistress Quickly, dam of the recent Riccarton winner. Sir Hugh. Hurdlers in Action Ridden by G. Ridgway. Brevity jm iped four hurdles in good style yesterday. A good display was slightly marred by a faulty landing over the last hurdle. Brevity is to race at Ashburton next month. Havering (M. P. Reilly) and Acena CA. Stove) were associated in a round of four hurdles, in which there was a good pace on all the way. There was little between them at the finish; but the honours were with Acena, who was having his first experience over the battens. While he has never been impressive over the big fences, thfere was little to fault with his exhibition yesterday, considering he is an absolute novice. Back In Work Capital has recovered from the soreness which necessitated his being given''a spell, and if he keeps sound It should not be long before he races again, as he lost little of his muscle during his absence from the tracks. Improvement Shown Heloise, who is a recent addition to J. S. Shaw’s team, is a vastly improved mare in appearance since she raced last October. She has thickened out a lot, and no doubt her good spell from racr ing will yield beneficial effects. At Riccarton Studley Royal, who was spelled after his Easter racing, has made his reappearance at Riccarton. He has rejoined the stable of F. Holmes. A Recent Operation The 10-year-old gelding Gold Knight, a more than useful hurdler of a season or two ago, has been operated on by Dr. W. C. Ring for respiratory trouble. By Paladin from Rainbow Gold, Gold Knight would Have won many more races had he not been affected in the wind.' [Wanganui Candidates Three local horses have been accorded entries for the Wanganui meeting, all being from Chokebore Lodge. Wild Chase, who is to contest the Guineas, will have his preliminary race in either the Seafield Handicap, of seven furlongs and a quarter, or the Flying Handicap, six furlongs, on the first day of the meeting. Impersonator has been nominated for the hack sprints; and Recollection, as well as being, in the shorter races, has engagements in races over one mile and 110 yards, arid one mile and a distance. The principal race on the first day, the Marangi Handicap, a mile and a quarter event, has attracted only five entries. aftd the similar event on the second day has drawn a nomination of 18. Names Not Registered Because their names were not registered with the New Zealand Racing Conference before the closing of acceptances, Tivoli and Silver Sound will be unable to compete at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting to-day. Tivoli was an acceptor for the Greenmount Steeplechase and Silver Sound for the Sylvia Park Handicap. , Red Manfred Sound Mrs Curie, who is sending Black Friar to Melbourne on September 4, was unfortunate in her Australian essay last spring with Red Manfred. Sent across under A. D. Webster’s care, the Manfred horse was seriously injured when he slipped on a bitumen road and then careered for a couple of miles before being caught It is understood that the incident will be the subject of a lawsuit later in the spring. Recently, Red Manfred was reported to be doing very well in his work, and there seems every possibility that be will reach his best again.. He will contest the sprint events at Wanganui, and his spring campaign will include the big handicaps in New Zealand during the next few months. Amongst the early races won by Red Manfred were the Wanganui Guineas, Great Northern St. Leger Stakes, and the Auckland Easter Handicap, so the prospects are that if he keeps sound he ■will add to his record this season. Successful Combination The Riccarton norseman, A. Messervy, will be Tiding at the Pakuranga Hunt Club’s meeting to-day. His mounts will include two of H. Rama’s team, Horowhenua and Tooley Street. , Messervy has had more than one success on Horowhenua aM the former successful combination may be seen to advantage again to-day. f TROTTING NOTES A Reminder Nominations for the Wellington Trotting Club’s spring meeting will Mose to-day. ■ Gala Day Gala Day was not quite up to the class required when she raced at Addington, earlier in the month; but in the Royal Oak Handicap at Auckland on Saturday she will be better stilted. Her recent racing should give her an advantage over most of the others engaged.

A Popular Pacer Vesuvius, one of the most popular pacers raced at Addington in recent years, is being treated to a spell. Now 13 vears old, Vesuvius is possibly losing" some of the dash that characterised his earlier racing. His trainer, V. Alborn, has again taken in hand a speedy trotter in Honeymoon. If this gelding stands up to a preparation he should win good races during the season. Wellington Trotting Club “The Wellington Trotting Club has totally disregarded the ‘assessed to do’ rule in the framing of the classes for its first programme of the season, and this policy should react to its benefit, for a number of horses assessed on the limit of the main two-mile event are outside the limit of the mile and a quarter event, and vice versa,” says the “Evening Post.” “The Bollard Memorial Handicap is for horses that will be handicapped on 4min 32sec or better, and the Wellington Handicap is a 2min 46sec class with the same conditions. An example of the criss-crossing of the marks of horses is provided by the reassessments after the Metropolitan meeting of Marie Celeste, Bonny Azure, and Reporter. Marie Celeste is now on 2min 47sec for a mile and a quarter and 4min 32sec for two miles, and, in contrast, Reporter is on 2min 44sec and 4min 33sec. This is explained by Marie Celeste’s winning over -two miles, and Reporter over sprint distances. Bonny. Azure is now on 2min 46sec and 4min 30sec. It is the horses that are conveniently placed in both events that mostly patronise Wellington meetings, and it is a tribute to the foresight of the programme committee that the list of horses in training and eligible is by no means a small one. Taking the two-mile event first, possible nominations include Bonny Azure, Rocks Ahead, Supertax, Young Frank, Peter Locanda, Queen Author, Logan’s Pride, Little Nelson, Gunfire, Francis Lincoln, Bingen Palm, Battlefield, Agile, Avernus, Craganour, Grace McElwyn, Guy Junior, Homeward, Marie Celeste, and Raydus. There are a number of others further back, including Willow Wave, Gold Tinge, Rollo, and Llewellyn’s Pride, who may avail themselves of this one remaining opportunity, remote though it seems, of qualifying for the New Zealand Cup. Support for the sprint events will come, in the main, from the'following:—Agile, Bonny Azure, Craganour, Grand Mogul, Gamble, Guy Junior, Grace McElwyn, Homeward, Llewellyn’s Pride, Raydus, Reporter, Rey Spec, Recess, Travis, War Buoy, Willow Wave, Young Frank, Supertax, Graham Direct, and Rocks Ahead. “The last-named would be on 36yds, and is therefore an unlikely starter in the sprint. Gamble and Graham Direct, who would be on 72yds in the two-mile event, come in on the 12yds mark in a 2min 46sec mile and a quarevent. Reporter, who would be giving away 12 yards to be in a 4min 32sec class, is on a 2min 44sec mile and a quarter mark,” Rapid Improvement

No horse has made more improvement during the last few months than Kewpie’s Crest, who will race at Auckland on Saturday, and he is now beginning to live up to the promise he gave in the early stages of his career. He showed a glimpse of his best form when he finished third at the Auckland meeting in June, and as a result was installed a strong favourite for the Second Maiden Handicap at Cambridge. He was a fair way back in the early stages and was still three lengths from the leader, Newton Parrish, as they came to the home turn. However, once his driver asked him a question, says an Auckland writer, he responded in great style, to just get up and beat Norrie Rock on the post. Penalised 36yds for his victory, he came out again in the final event, the Victoria Street Handicap, but his task looked much harder here off 72yds. With a mile gone his prospects did not look at all promising, but he then unwound a great sprint, with the result that he was within striking distance a furlong from home. However, the start he was giving Baron Grand in the run to the post was a little beyond him, and he suffered defeat by a neck. On a slow track he registered 3min 29 2-sseq. Kewpie’s Crest is one of the progeny of that fine brood mare Kewpie, who has proved an outstanding success at the stud. He has taken a long time to come right, but his efforts on Saturday augur well for his future prospects.

A Speedy Pacer

It is doubtful whether there is a speedier pacer in training at Epsom than the black pacer Star Pronto, but, says the Auckland “Star,” he is inclined to be a bit erratic, and on quite a number of occasions he has completely ruined excellent winning chances through making a break. At Cambridge he competed in the Militia Handicap, and was sent out a strong second favourite. He began in firstrate style and settled down just in behind the leaders. Crossing the top the last time the gelding made a fast move on the outside, with the result that 'when the field straightened up for the run home, he was just showing out in front of Parochial. From then on he finished in great style, and nothing had a chance with the Aus-tralian-bred gelding. It was a really
