OBITUARY

MISS M. A. M’DONALD [THE PRESS special Servlce.l OAMARU, August 18. After a long illness, the death occurred this morning at her home, “Rocklands,” Totara, North Otago, of Miss M. A. McDonald, who was well known for her kindly and sympathetic nature and who was respected by many friends, not only in Oamaru but also in Christchurch. Miss McDonald was bom on the Otago Peninsula. Dunedin, in 1869. being the fourth daughter of Mr and Mrs James McDonald. The family was keenly interested in the lime industry, in which it was associated for nearly half a century. Mr McDonald first opened works at Milbum and then came to North Otago, where he started a quarry at Whitescraigs. and later at 1 Totara. On his death, the industry was carried on by the family at Kakanui, and ih recent years was acquired by a company, McDonald’s lime works are widely known throughout the Dominion, and for several years. Miss McDonald was keenly interested in the progress of this important industry. Much of Miss McDonald’s time was taken up in her beautiful garden at “Rocklands.” Her artistic and decorative abilities were fully recognised and her services in this direction were eagerly sought after. Miss McDonald was a member of the Totara Presbyterian Church, to which, some years ago, with her sister, who has since died, she presented a handsome oak communion table in memory of her mother, Mrs Jane McDonald. I ■ l * HUSBANDS AS HOSTS The husbands of members of the St. Faith’s branch of the Mothers’ Union were hosts at a pleasant social given to their wives and friends in the Parish Hall, New Brighton. Successful arrangements had been made by a committee consisting of Messrs E. J, Hill, ”• Ardern, F. T. Tindall, and L. A. Walker. Competitions, games, and dancing were included on the evening’s programme. Music for dancing was played by Mesdames L. Walker and E. Jones, and a song was sung by the master of ceremonies, Mr H. Ardern. A lucky spot valetta was won by Mr G. C. Gillman and Mrs F. Harper, and prizes for competition: were won by Mesdames S. Wilde and J. Nute, and Miss Lorraine Branch. . Those iresent included Mr and Mrs E. J. Hill, Mr and Mrs H. Cardinal, Mr and Mrs L. Walker, Mr and Mrs H. Speak, Mr and Mrs L. R. Hurrell, Mr and Mrs F. T. BRIDGE AND “500” PARTY

Mrs D. V. Evans (Bury street, Sumner) was hostess at an enjoyable bridge and “500” party, in aid of funds for the Sumner branch of the Seamen’s Society. Prizes were won and given back to the society by Mrs J. A. Merry and Miss S. Mitchell. Those present included Mesdames D. V. Evans, T. B. Boulton, C. Crosby, J. Wilson, Mathews, Riordan, C. E. Stace, Misses P. Treloar, H. Roberton, S. Mitchell, and L. E. Harris, CARD PARTY Mrs J. Metson (Westport) was •hostess at an enjoyable bridge .party held at her home in Queen street. Those present were Mesdames Struthers, Lovell, Bird, Slee, Henley, Metson, and Misses Harkness and Ferens.

She wore also a short fur coat, and her bouquet was of golden freesias. Mrs Beadel wore a black tailored suit, a shell pink georgette blouse, and a black straw hat. She carried scarlet anemones and tulips. , ~ For travelling the bride wore a frock of navy blue silk crepe trimmed with a buttoned frill from the neck-line to the hem, the collar being of blue lace. Her fur-trimmed coat was of blue flecked tweed, and her hat of stitched taffeta Was finished with two white gardenias. Mr and Mrs Ralph Beadel will leave Auckland by the Mariposa on Saturday for a visit to Fiji. On their return they will live at ‘Bridge Field, Heathfleld avenue. Fendalton. MACKENZIE—DONALDSON A wedding of inter*# to West Melton residents was celebrated recently at St. Paul’s Church, Cashel street, when Bruce Alexander, second son of Mr and Mrs E. W- Mackenzie (Dargaville), was married to Esther Mabel, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Donaldson, West Melton. The ceremony was performed by the Rev, Tbeo. Paterson (Halkett). * The bride was given away by her ( father, and the attendants were Miss ‘Agxu* Donaldson, the bride’s sialst.
