WAGE TAX
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—ln your full account of the budget you state there was to be no alteration in the unemployment taxes. I may be mistaken, but I understood persons over 65 years of age receiving less than £lO4 a year were to be exempt from the wage tax. These conditions apply to myself, but 1 am still having 8d in the pound deducted. If this exemption is being made, when did it come into force? Outside the Christchurch money order office are posted up all particulars of the 1931 and 1932 acts, out nothing about 1936 amendments. This shows the folly of broadcasting new legislation, which would be retained better in the memory if read in print. Can you kindly advise me? —Yours, etc., ENQUIRER.
August 12, 1936. [Officials at the Land and Income Tax Department explained that the exemption applies only in cases where an income has been declared. They suggested that “Enquirer” was confusing income with wages, from, which there was no exemption.]
