FRUIT GROWERS MEET
GUARANTEED PRICE FOR INDUSTRY A report on the Dominion conference of fruit growers held recently in Wellington was given by Mr E. A. Stead, a delegate from Canterbury at the meeting of the Tomato and Stone Fruit Growers’ Association held on Saturday night. Mr C. E. Pope presided over a good attendance. A deputation had approached the Minister for Finance (the Hon. W. Nash), Mr Stead said, asking for a guaranteed price for the industry. They had been told by the Minister th .t the matter would be considered when the seasonal returns from the industry were complete.
The Teviot Fruit Growers’ Association, Ltd., Otago, forwarded a copy of resolutions passed at meetings held in Central Otago, and asked for the association’s support for them. The resolutions were: That the meeting favours compulsory grading and standardisation of fruit offered for sale with the provision of a minimum grade; that a system of packing stone fruit 6n a size basis to be marked on the labels be introduced; that the meeting favours the Government taking over the control of distribution of Otago stone fruit. After a brief discussion the matter was postponed until next meeting.
