FORTUNE TO FOUR SISTERS
BROTHER’S LEGACY OF £1,000,000
UNSUSPECTED MILLIONAIRE OF PHILIPPINES (r&oif oca own coi-assto scent.) SYDNEY, August 6. A fortune of £1,000,000 has been left to four Sydney sisters by a bachelor brother who died intestate at Manila, Philippine Islands. The beneficiaries are Mrs J. Ward, Mrs J. Barrett, Mrs J. Swift, and Mrs W. H. Ingham. The millionaire was Mr Tom Phillips, a native of Picton, New South Wales, and one time quartermaster on P. and O. liners. He died in 1934, and more than six months elapsed before news came to Australia of the fortune he had left. Forty years ago he went to the Philippines gold fossicking, and on three occasions that he had since visited Sydney, he never suggested to anyone that he was anything more than the manager of a gold mine. All the while he was the owner of one large gold mine, and held large interests in two others, each employing 1000 or more men; tin mines, and numerous other profitable investments.
Mrs Ingham returned to Sydney this week from the Philippines where she had arranged the administration of the estate. “We used to call him Uncle Tom,” she said, speaking of Mr Phillips, “but we never dreamed he was our rich uncle Tom. He was a lovable man, very kind, and he had planned to come over and live with us last March. He was 73 years of age when he died suddenly, before a will could be prepared. It is still a little bewildering to me that I have come intd such a fortune. Home music, church, and charity work will fill my life to the brim. The only difference will be the greater joy” of greater giving.”
