W. Percival, on the Mew Gull, entered hy the Duke of Kent, finished the course after winning a £SO prize for the highest speed of the day. The aerodrome was being deluged by rain. It had become so murky that the beacon lighthouse was used. Mr. Percival’s average speed for the whole course, counting time spent at halts as flying time, was 171.6 m.p.h- . ■ Of the: 28 original entries, 26 started. All the machines were fitted with Gfpsy engines. Of the starters only one was :a biplane, and only three had two engines. There were several retirements from the race. Mrs J. A. Mollison, during the second circuit, found, after leaving Bristol, that her undercarriage could not be drawn up, and as a consequence her speed dropped and she was bemg overtaken again and again. She did not land at Nottingham, but ’new straight back to Hatfield and retired from the contest. The final event was over a course of 304J miles in 12 circuits of a triangle with corners at Hatfield, Sacombe, and Hoo End, Hertfordshire. Each circuit was 25.35 miles. The winner was Mr Charles Gardner in Sir Ccnnop Guthrie’s Vega Gull at a speed of 164.5 miles an hour. FilghtLieutenant T. Rose, last year’s winner, was second, in Lady Wakefield’s Hawk Six at an average speed of 184.5 miles an hour, and the third place was taken by a new twinengined high-wing monoplane. Lord Willoughby de Broke’s Double Eagle (Gipsy Sixes) flown at 181 miles an hour by Flight-Lieutenant A B. Wilson.- The fastest machine in the race was the Duke of Kent’s Mew Gull in which Mr Percival took fourth place at a speed of 203 miles an hour. Mr Gardner, a young pilot, of 25, was seventh in last year’s race, and won the Siddeley Trophy as the representative of his light aeroplane club, though he' had taken the full commercial pilot’s course at the Hamble Training School. Earlier this year he flew to India and took part in the race for the Viceroy’s Cup. In Saturday’s race he was the only competitor who improved on the speed on which his handicap was based. The speed of his Vega Gull had been estimated by the handieappers at 161.5 mites an hour. Progress of Race When he took the lead at the end of the tenth round, he was followed by Captain de Havilland, Flight-Lieuten-ant Rose, Mr Waight, Mr Humbie, and Flight-Lieutenant J. B. Wilson, with Mr Percival in the twelfth place. At the next circuit, Mr Gardner was overjjpping tha slowest Capt&iyt de Havilland had been overhauled by four others,; and Flight-Lieutenant Wilson had overtaken Mr Humble* Captain Percival had climbed up'to eighth place, and in the next circuit he was to gain another four places. The other important changes in the last lap were the improvement of Flight-Lieutenant Wilson from fourth to third, arid the decline of Mr Waight from third to sixth. In these circumstances there could be no excitement until the last two circuits, and by that time Um ecatiwMWi bub toe alter* noon had damped the spirits of the spectators. Flight-Lieutenant Clouston (handicap 38mih 53sec) attained 137 miles an hour and finished twelfth. In the flying sense, the race was excellent There was no failure in engines,, aircraft or pilots. All 14 starters finished toe course of _ 312 miles at full throttle and within a few miles an hour of their estimated speeds. As soon as toe race was over the winners were presented with their prizes by Lord Swinton, Secratoy •* State Us Ala
