SPORTS CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING AT ALLBNTON REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES The annual meeting of the Alienton Sports Club was held last evening, with the president (Mr E. C. Bathurst) presiding. The financial statement showed that the year began With a credit balance of £3l 9s 9d and closed with a credit of £SO 8s Id. The chief receipts were: Subscriptions £129 15s, refreshment levy £l4 6s, proceeds of closing day £ll 10s 6d, general £l9 19s Id. The expenditure included maintenance £lB 17s sd, wages £92 10s, general £Bl 16s 10d. Assets exceeded liabilities by £779 6s 3d. The annual report expressed regret at the death of Mr J. Connolly, M.P., who had always taken a keen interest in the affairs of the club. The mortgage on the club’s property matured during the year, and as the mortgagee did not wish to renew, arrangements were made for a loan of £4OO. Competitions and other gatherings were held to increase the club’s funds, and altogether £3O 18s was raised. These showed that members’ subscriptions did not cover the working expenses, and the most desirable remedy for this would be a substantial increase In the membership. After the close of the season the tennis section decided to form a badminton club, and indications showed that this new section should prove an asset to the club. Enthusiastic members of the bowling section formed a working bee to turf one of the banks of the green. The season was closed with an innovation of a field day, when the prizes won during the season were presented.

The tennis report said that in many ways the season was successful. Eight matches were played, three of which were won and five lost. Club championships were won by W. T. Corbett (men’s) and Miss K. Sowden (women’s).

The badminton section reported that it was not possible to give a complete review of its activities, as its season was still in progress, but the membership was quite satisfactory. The reports of the croquet and bowling sections review successful seasons. Officers elected were:—Patron, Mr A Walker; president, Mr E. C. Bathurst; vice-presidents, Mrs J. A. Walker and Mr R. Mclnnes; secretary, Mr R. T. Clarke: treasurer, Mr R. O. Bathurst; delegates to executive, Messrs H. Silver wood and P. Boothroyd (bowls), Miss M. McDowell and Mrs D A. Morgan (croquet), Miss F. F. Sparrow and Mrs W, T. Corbett (badminton); refreshment committee, Mrs L. A, Walker, Miss J, Meeking, and Mr P, Boothroyd; auditor. Mr J, P. Boothroyd.
