STEPHEN’S CLUB MEETING AT ASHBURTON The weekly meeting of St, Stephen’s Literary and Social Club was held on Wednesday. An Instructive lecture v.as given by Mr R. P. Ghlbnall. _ A part of the remainder of the evening was taken up with impromptu speeches, in which all present took part The subject “That the Government is well advised to extend the working hours to 44 a week in certain industries,” was selected for the debate against the Foresters’ Lodge on August 26. Messrs C. Attwood, J. Hamilton, and O. Moore were chosen as the club’s team. Mr E. J. Wood i offer to give a lecture on “The Maoris and Their Folk Lore” was accepted for next Wednesday.

MINIATURE RIFLES ASHBURTON CLUB’S SHOOT

There was only a moderate attendance at the weekly shoot of the Ashburton Miniature Rifle Club, held on Wednesday, when the first portion of ■a trophy shoot was begun. The best scores were as follows:—H. E. Shierlaw, 80, 78; L. McNatty 78, 78; E. Beach. 74. 71; R. Reddecliffe, 77. 76; R, Childs, 78, 78; A. Etheridge. 79, 78; A. J. Shepherd, 78, 77. Shepherd comprised a team which competed at the Timaru championships last Saturday, and was successful m getting into the teams’ prize list. ASHBURTON PERSONALS Mr E. Bucha nan > after an illness of eight weeks, was admitted to St. George’s Hospital, Christchurch, on Tuesday, and underwent an operation Oil Wednesday. He is reported to be making satisfactory progress. Messrs A. C. Gadd (Lyndhurst) and J. O’Connell (Marawiti) will leave Ashburton on Monday to join the farmers’ touring party, which Will leave Wellington by the Makura for a six weeks’ tour in Australia. Mr R. L. Stephenson, of Ashburton, has been appointed local representative of the State Advances Corporation of New Zealand, and valuer for the new building and housing schemes. Mr Stephenson represented the Mortgage Corporation for a considerable period. Mr E. M. Gabites has been appointed architect to toe corporation.

MILITARY BALL YEOMANRY CAVALRY AT WAKANUI The Wakanui members of the Ashburton squadron of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry held their annual ball in the Memorial Hall on Wednesday evening. The hall was effectively decorated with the troop’s colours, rifles and lances. The hall was also gaily festooned with streamers and multi-coloured balloons. The winners of the Monte Carlo were Miss E. Thompson and Mr L. Snell, and the lucky spot Miss B. Cavill and Mr R. Heselttae. The music was played by Cook’s orchestra, extras being played by Mr R. Williamson (bagpipes). The duties of masters of ceremonies were carried out by Messrs J. Brand and A. Begg. Among those present were Mr and Mrs M. Kingsbury, Mr and Mrs A. Amos, Mesdames Begg. G. Brand, and Morgan, Lieutenant A. Garrlock (representing Ashburton Volunteers), Misses S. Heinz, T. Quinn, E. Strlbling, J. Delow, K. O’Connor, K. Kenny, M. Kenny. JB. Cavill, J. Hay&ton, M.
