ABOLITION OF STAND-DOWN PERIOD SUGGESTED

A decision to urge that the standdown .period of two weeks be abolished and that when men are paid off jobs they shall become eligible for other works on ihe No. 5 scheme or for full sustenance, immediately on being re-registered, was made by the Greymouth branch of the New Zealand Workers’ Union at a recent meeting. Mr W. Meates presided. - The branch received advice that the Kiwi crossing job would be proceeded with immediately.. 1 : The meeting expressed the hope that * this-work would enable men paid off the Brunner-Blackball road job to be placed. It was said that the union for several months fiad been asking for this job, and that the union _ appreciated the efforts of the Minister in getting the job, which should meet with the approval of the Brunner men, whom it was desired to see back at work soon.. The meeting considered a proposal to form a medical fund with the branch. The executive was directed to consider the matter and report to the next meeting. The meeting expressed appreciation of the efforts of the Cabinet Ministers, Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., and the general secretary, Mr A. Cook, for their efforts to find work for the West Coast districts to keep the men fully employed. The union upheld the principle of considering the utility of a harbour at Point Elizabeth, which it was said, was calculated to prove a question of perhaps vital importance in the future to the provision of safe navigation for the West Coast. The branch unanimously decided to support the Runanga Borough Council in its suggestion about a harbour at Point Elizabeth. . Mr Meates was appointed delegate to the .Labour Representation Committee.

COMMENT ON SPLENDID WORK DONE The , splendid work that had been done by the Greymouth branch the sub-branches of the Plunket Society was mentioned by Mr W. Meldrum, chairman, at the annual meeting of-the branch yesterday afternoon. There was no doubt that the branch was carrying on a wonderful work, *aid Mr Meldrum. It deserved every credit for the amount of time which it gave to. the work and for the results achieved. Mr Meldrum mentioned the large amount of work done by the branch, as shown in the report. The financial reports were, on the whole, exceedingly good, he said. The work was going on steadily and the funds of the yarious sub-branches were being carefiiHy looked after. _A motion of sympathy with Mrs J. O’Brien in the death of her mother wa s passed. The meeting also expressed regret at Mrs O’Brien’s recent accident.
