A fatal accident occurred this afternoon at Howey’s bridge, 16 miles from Taumarunui. A ■ Maori, W. Haupapa, was driving a lorry laden with a bush log, and had a passenger, David Crosby. 'When the lorry was crossing it the bridge collapsed and the lorry fell into the creek. Crosby was killed instantly, and Haupapa’s shoulders were badly crushed. He was admitted to the Taumarunui Hospital. CAR PLUNGES OFF ROAD INTO CREEK THREE MEN HURT IN MISHAP AT SEDDON [THE PRESS Special Service.] BLENHEIM, August 10. Three persons were hurt in a motor accident at Seddon when a car driven by William Cassidy, with James Watson and A. J. Henery, all public works employees at Wharanui, as passengers, left the road at a sharp bend and plunged down a steep bank into a creek several feet below. Ail three men were brought into the Wairau Hospital, where they were found to be suffering from leg injuries and bruises. None is in a serious condition. The car was badly damaged and from its appearance and from the nature of the spot where the accident occurred, the men had a wonderful escape. By coincidence two other accidents occurred at almost the same spot and within half an hour of each other. In one case a man was knocked down by a car near the ferry bridge on the main road from Blenheim to Picton, but was unhurt except for a few bruises, and in the other, a pedestrian was knocked over by a motor-cyclist. A fall of earth at the King Solomon mine at 7.40 this morning crushed and killed a single man, George Russell, aged 23 years, whose mother, Mrs Clements, resides in Timaru.
