IMPRISONMENT FOR YOUNG MAORI
RESPONSIBILITY OF PARENTS (rasas ±s*ociatio» t*osg*±m- : AUCKLAND, August 10. That Maori councils and other Authorities should take steps to see that girls and young men are nou allowed to share the same rooms, was the opinion expressed by Mr Justice Fair at the Supreme Court to-day, when George Moses, a young Whakatane Maori, was before him for sentence for unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl 12 years of age. In several cases similar _to the one fcefore the court, said the judge, there had been evidence that young people of different sexes were sharing the same room. In such cases, tne parents of the girls were gravely to blame for allowing-such conditions to continue. “Maori councils and other authorities should take steps to ensure such things do not take place,” he added. “Parents must recognise the danger of allowing young girls to be exposed to such risk. All those circumstances don’t excuse the young man. who us a good deal older than the girl. The object of the law is to protect the morals and future happiness ol these youhg girls.” , . 1Q The accused was sentenced to months’ hard labour.
