- ENTRANCE to scenic RESERVE COUNCIL TO MAKE' INSPECTION

An offer to give an area of about half an' acre of land to provide an tmtrande to the scenic reserve, via Chaucer street, has been made to the Timaru Borough Council by Mr, G. Hardie, on condition that the borough pay all necessary expenses, and fence ’the boundary between the balance of the donor’s property and the section concerned. It was decided at last night’s meeting of the council to view the land before accepting the gift. The Mayor (Mr P. C. Vinnell) presided. • . , _ The Town Clerk (Mr E. A. S. Killick) reported that representatives of the council and the.Automobile Association (South Canterbury) met at the Bay Viaduct to discuss traffic control. The committee reported that a report from the town clerk about levies struck under the Fire Brigade Act had been considered and referred to the executive of the Municipal Association, it being the opinion that the companics should pay the greater proportion of fire board requirements. The report said that a remit aiming at amending the act to make provision for an increase of the levies made by insurance companies was lost on the voices at the 1934 conference, but this was regarded as being of little importance. , ' ... The report of the works committee stated that a request had been received for the sealing of the road and footpaths in Baker street, and it was recommended that the matter be given favourable consideration with next year’s estimates. A framed photograph ‘of the late Mayor, Mr T. W. Satterthwaite, the gift of the Satterthwaite family, was received, together with an offer to add, at the family’s expense, a link to the Mayoral chain: The family also offered the council a number of photographs hanging ■in the Mayor’s room at the council chambers. A motion of sympathy was passed to the relatives of Mr H. A. Innes-Jones, a former councillor, it being decided to express appreciation of his services. On the motion of Or, P, B- Foote it was decided to ask employers, wherever possible, to grant their employees a holiday on occasion of the Ranfurly Shield match between Otago and South Canterbury, at Duned;n, on August 28, when a special tram will be run from Timaru. . , , . Cr. M. H. Richards was appointed to the works committee during the absence of Cr. W. H. Hall abroad. Cr. A, G. Foster referred to street lighting, and suggested that an inspection be made of the borough, to improve the position. Cr. A. S. Kinsman suggested that the centre street lighting be investigated. , It was decided to get a report from the electricity committee which was asked to investigate the basis of the annual charge for street lights. The borough and electrical engineers were also requested to expedite their reports on street lighting. LAND FOR AERODROME OFFER TO MACKENZIE COUNTY COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Mackenzie County Council was held in Fairlie. Mr Geo. Murray was appointed acting-chairman. The Automobile Association wrote asking for permission to erect signposts in the county* This was granted. Another letter from the association suggested that whiter lines at corners should be continuous instead of broken up into blocks. .. It was decided that the matter did not affect the council. It was reported that there were 25 men on unemployed work, and the total amount paid since the previous meeting was £2lB, of which the council had to find. £l7 18s,,besides-the ganger’s wages, amounting to £2O 5s sd, and a orepordon of the foreman’s time. The financial statement .showed a debit balance at the bank of £9319 5s 3d. A letter was received from Mr W. Scott asking the council to alter the course of a water-race running diagonally across a paddock of 44 acres. The race carried away the water from the races in Fairlie, and he wanted it to run along a boundary fence. In return for the work he offered the council the field, which was 17 x 25 chains, for a.landing ground for aeroplanes, for a period to be agreed upon, the nominal rental to be 10s a year. He added that during the year 14 tendings had been made in the adjoining field, which was further from the road. On the motion of Mr A. F Campbell, it was decided to thank Mr Scott for his offer, and to appoint the Fairlie riding members to go into the matter.
