UNIONISM FOR CLERKS
MINISTER DEFINES
POSITION
REGISTRATION NOT. TO BE
LIGHTLY GRANTED
“The granting of registration to different groups of clerical workers is a question that can be decided only on certain conditions,” said the Minister for Labpur (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong), who arrived in Christchurch yesterday from Wellington. “I can say definitely that it is not my intention to approve the registration as a union of every group which makes application. If I did the general union of clerical workers would merely be whittled down to a shadow of itself.” Mr Armstrong said that he had decided to approve the registration of certain groups of clerical workers where, either the work engaged In could be shown to be part of a definitely defined industry, or there had been previous associations of workers acting for the benefit of those engaged in a particular class of work. On these grounds the Minister proposed to approve the registration of separate unions for local body clerks, accountants’ assistants, freezing company clerks and shipping clerks, in addition to those groups including law, insurance, and bank clerks to which registration had already been accorded or promised.
