OFFICIAL FORECASTS [THE -’RESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, August 9. The Dominion Observatory’s weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m., and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: — Westerly winds predominating and strong and squally at times, but backing at Intervals to southwest; weather for most part fair to fine, but changeable and with occasional rain in most places; temperatures moderate; seas mdoeratc. The following is the Dominion forecast: — Weather changeable with Intermittent rain in districts with westerly aspect mainly, but extending occasoinaliy to eastern parts; temperatures moderate. Pressure Is still relatively high across the North Tasman Sea and north of New Zealand, while a series of westerly depressions is passing fa the south, a deep one being located this morning over Tasmania. Winds—Moderate to strong westerlies prevailing, but backing m soma places at times to south-west; gale force probable in exposed positions. Seas (New Zealand waters) —Hough south of Cape Egmont and about Cook and Foveaux straits; elsewhere slight to moderate, but rising north of Cape Egmont. Eastern Tasman Sea—Westerly winds prevailing; strong to squally at times with rough seas. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER Though . cold on Saturday, the weather during the week-end was fine, and yesterday was sunny. On Saturday morning there was a frost ox nearly 12 degrees. Last night the sky was clear and the air keen. At 1 o’clock this morning the sky was clear and a light northerly breeze was blowing. The tore was 40 degrees, and the barometer, rising slowly, registered 29.84 inches.

Sunshine recorded on “The Press” recorder:—Saturday: Before noon, 4 hours 15 minutes; after noon, ml. Yesterday: Before noon 4 hours 20 minutes; after noon, 4 hours 15 minutes. Total, 12 hours 50 nrntues. Total for year- to date, 1051 hours. Total for corresponding period last year, 1151 hours 5 minutes. Total for corresponding period, 1934, 1095 hours 25 minutes. IN OTHER PLACES Auckland—The weather was fine with occasional cloudy, unsettled intervals during the week-end. The wind was light to moderate, and varied between north-west and west. The barometer has been practically steady at 30.00 inches since Friday night. Wellington—There was a frost of 4 degrees on Saturday morning. The day was mostly cloudy with a moderate north-west wind, increasing to gale force in the afternoon, with gusts reaching 58 miles an hour at 2.50 p.m. and 11.30 p.m Nine points of rain fell in a heavy shower at about 11 p.m. Yesterday was fine and clear in the morning with a fresh north-westerly wind, but it clouded over during the afternoon. The maximum temperature on Saturday was 50.3 degrees, and the minimum on Saturday night was 43.8 degrees. The maximum yesterday was 56.8 degrees. Dunedin —The weather on Saturday was dull, with cool temperatures. There was a slight north-east breeze, and pressure fell throughout the day.
