ASSAULT WITH AXE ALLEGED
CHARGE AGAINST MAN AT GISBORNE (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) GISBORNE, August 8. Assault with an axe was alleged against Henry Denton before justices of the peace this morning at Gisborne. The accused was convicted and sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment. The evidence showed that Denton called at a house where he had previously lodged, and after striking another man with his fists, had taken up an axe and tried to chop him down.
Denton said that he l)ad ho intention of striking the other man, but fell over the axe and then threw it out of his way.
