OBITUARY

REV. M. J. BYRT (rSBSS ASfOCUTXO* TILIQBIU..I tXuMAHUNUI, August 8. The death has occurred of the Rev. M. J. Byrt, minister in charge of the Taumafunui Presbyterian Church. Mr Byrt, who was 60 years of age, was born in Australia. He came' to New Zealand 30 years ago and joined the ministry of the Presbyterian Church during the war. He came to Taumarunui three years ago from Whangarei. He leaves a wife, two sons and one daughter. MR GEORGE CROWE Mr George Crowe, who died recently, had been identified with Oxford almost from the beginning of settlement. Mr Crowe was born in Essex, England, in 1858, and came to New Zealand with his parents in the ship Ambrosyne, arriving in Lyttelton in 1880. The family came immediately to Oxford, where settlement was just beginning. Mr Crowe began his schooling at a private institute, and when the state school was opened in 1872 he attended there. He was later engaged in farming operations. Mr Crowe was an active Oddfellow, and was also a member of the Gust Mounted Rifies. He took a good deal of interest in hunting, and in the Oxford Jockey Club. In 1824 he was married to Selina Lisle. The furieral took place at the Oxford cemetery, the Rev. H. F. Ault officiating. The Oddfellows’ service Was also read. MR WILLIAM PALMER Mr William Palmer, whose death occurred at Rakaia recently, came to New Zealand from Gosport, England, 60 years ago. After working on a farm in the Doric district for some years, he bought a farm of his own In Rakaia, which he farmed successfully until his death. Mr Palmer was a keen bowler and was a member of the Rakaia Club. He was also one of the foundation members of the Rakaia Horticultural Society.,. Mr Palmer married the only daughter of Mr and Mrs Nicholas Welsh, of Clhertsey. He is survived by his wife khd one son, Mr William Palmer, Rakaia.
