CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS RACES OVER THE CASHMERE COURSE Seven of eight cross-country clubs held championship fixtures on Saturday. Competition for tire dub titles was expected to be exceptionally keen, but sickness, injury, and the rough and heavy state of the open country upset calculations. Most of the events were won easily in comparatively slow times. R. F. Rogers, former holder of the Canterbury junior title, won the Christchurch Club’s championship. He made a fast pace from the start and came home more than 70 seconds ahead of the second man, D. H. Pannell. The race was held over the Canterbury championship course from the Old Stone House, Cashmere, where the Baptist, University, Marist, and Technical Clubs also competed. The list of new champions determined in the day’s racing is as follows: — Open Christchurch; R. F. Rogers. Baptist: D. Brown. . University: A. McD. Stevenson. Technical; R. Dynes. Marist: A. The Christchurch Club’s championship at Cashmere did not produce the keen racing expected. Rogers won his title with ease and finished comparatively fresh. Pannell failed to produce his Halswell form and was well beaten, with L. E. Fox well back in third place. Results were:— R. F. Rogers, 42min ssec, 1; D. H. Pannell, 43min 18sec, 2; L. E. Fox, 44mln ssec, 3; T. Bartlett, 45min 21sec, 4; L. J. Sparkes, 46min 20sec, 5; S. Riley, 47min 16sec, 6; F. H. Cookson, 47min 20sec, 7. Rogers won the sealed handicap. The junior race was held oyer a shorter course, and was won easily by H; Novis. The results were:—H. Novis 1, R. Mooney 2, L. H. Goode 3, K. Craig 4. University

The University Club raced over the Cashmere course. A. McD. Stevenson, whose form has steadily improved this season, ran a good race to win comfortably in 42min SOsec from A. T. Shannon. Third place was filled by K. W. Robinson, who lost his shoes In the mud early In the race and ran most of the way barefooted. F. Malr, who had been expected to win the Baptist Club’s race, was suffering a poisoned hand and had to withdraw at an early stage, leaving D. Brown and the junior, J. Turner, to fight out the race. Brown won narrowly in the closest finish of the day at Cashmere. Turner finished both runner-up in the open championship and winner of the junior title. Results were;—D. Brown, 46min, 1; J. Turner, 46min Xsec, 2; L. Suckling, 47min 35sec, 3; A. Webley, 4; E. Riddle, 5; N. G. Coffin, 6; S. Wilton, 7. Marist A. O'Connell raced away from the field in the early stages of the Marist Club’s race and led all the way to win as he pleased. Tlhe run was held over the fivemile course. No time was taken. Results were:—A. O’Connell 1, P. J. Consedine 2, P. Sharp and J. Davidson (equal) 3, F. Hendren 5. Technical The Technical Club raced over the Cashmere course taking the high hills. M. W. Busby, who was expected to win the title, was beaten by R. Dynes, a junior who has run consistently throughout the season. Placings were:—R. Dynes 1, M. .W, Busby 2. L. C. Richards 3. M. White 4.‘S. C. V. Mulrson 5, C. A. B. Stevenson 6. Presbyterian More than 40 runners competed in the Presbyterian Club’s championship over a five and a half mile trail from the St. Martin’s Presbyterian Church. Resultswere:—R. C. Ritchie 1, E. Minnery 2, J. Labudde 3, C. C. Gordon 4. L. Wooles 5, R. Lindsay 8. Results of the junior championship were: —K. Fehsenfeld 1, W. Hewitt 2. G. Hllller 3, J. Anglican Thirty members of the Anglican Club competed over a six-mile trail from the home of Mr and Mrs A. W. Minson, Vincent place, Opawa. The runners followed a six-mile trail over hill and flat country. Results were;—A. Brady 1, J. Booker 2, S. H. Barnett 3, D. Fbrbes 4, F. Gillett 5, C. Skerton 6. The Methodist Club postponed its championship, which was to have been run on Saturday, and held a pack run from the home of the Rev. Clarence Eaton, Chester street. Results were:— Racing Pack—A. H. CHRISTCHURCH LADIES* PIONEER CLUB

The Christchurch Ladies’ Pioneer Harrier Club were the guests of Mrs R. G. Thomson, at Cholmondeley avenue, Opawa. The trail was laid by Beryl Thomson and Cathie Sheridan, and led for seven miles through Opawa, St. Martins, Hillsborough, and home via Bcckenhan. Results:—Junior: Shirley Mourltsen 1, Ruby Murray 2, Vesta Emanuel 3. Fast: Mavis Lee 1, Edna -Wickes 2.
