STEEPLECHASE MEETING AT

ASHBURTON

With recoid entries totalling t>7 and a record attendance, the Ashburton branch of the Christchurch Hunt Club staged its best point-to-point steeplechase meeting to date at Wakanui on Saturday, when and South Canterbury and Ashburton hunting enthusiasts were largely represented. Tue weather for the meeting was perfect. .... The course, which was situated on the farms of Messrs A. Amos and J. Bomfant, was an ideal one, and comprised nine jumps, including two road doubles and' With large fields, excellent open country racing was seen A high terrace running alongside the course provided a natural grandstand for patrons of the meeti'g, and gave a good view of the races. Wak meeting was well organised by the officials under Messrs J. H. Grigg (president). A. J. Nicou (chairman ot committee), W. Z. D. Ferriman (field secretary), and R. D. Hefford (honorary secretary)Mi’ J. J. Lewis was judge of the hunter trials, while Mr H, Morris was judge of the racing events. Before the presentation of trophies by Mrs J. H. Grigg, Mr D. W. Westenra (president of the Christchurch Hunt Club) congratulated the Ashburton branch on the success of the meeting, and thanked the landowners for the use of the course. From a good start Scotsden led the field over four jumps and turned off at the second road double, giving way to The Piper, which maintained the lead for the remainder - of the round. Scotsden went to the front after The Piper had made a faulty jump at the second road double in the kecond round. They were closely followed by Cock o’ the North, and Grail till the second last jump from home, where The Piper fell and Scotsden ■went on to win comfortably by a length and a half from Cock o’ the North, with Grail three lengths behind third. Burglar 12-3; Sir Beresford 12-0; Sea Boy 11-7: Dundas Girl 11-7; Ace Pot 11-3; Dan 11-0 also started. . ~ Sir Beresford led at the first road double and then Dundas Girl took up the running for a brief spell, giving way to Burglar, which led the field for the greater part of the race. Harkaway was second from Burglar and Richard was third in the second round. The gap between the leaders was then rapidly closed and Richard took the lead from Burglar at the last road double. At the final hurdle jump Tea Urn caught the leaders and in a spirited finish won by a neck from Harkaway, with Richard a head back third.

Waif took the lead, which it maintained till the end of the first round, when all the horses ran off at the second road double, giving way to Kohinoor. Waif came again, closely followed by The Joker, but lost its position when it ran off again on the final run, and The Joker •went on to win by five lengths from Waif, with Kohinoor two lengths sway In third place. Faloose failed to take the first road double after four attempts and withdrew.
