FRIDAY (Before Mr E. C. Lewey, S.M.) TRAFFIC CASES For breaches of the traffic by-laws the following fines were imposed:— Cycling without a light—Lew Clarke, 10s - Clarence Charles James, 10s; Charles William Lester, costs only; Walter Ernest Cumming, 10s; Ella Smart 10s; Eric Atherton Smith, costs only. Handisides was also fined 20s for parking too far from the kerb. Cycling on the footpath and without a light—Noel Parker was convicted and discharged. „ . ...... DEFENDED ACTION * Norman Neylon, a butcher, of New Brighton, who pleaded not guilty to three charges—negligent driving, failing to render assistance after an accident, and failing to report an accident •m-wiis convicted on each charge after evidence had been heard from several witnesses, one of whom had been brought from Invercargill. He was fined £2 on the first charge and £1 on each of the other two, and was ordered to pay costs and witnesses’ expenses. , , , Mr P. P. J. Amodeo represented Neylon. It was stated in evidence that Neylon’s car had knocked down two boys on a bicycle. He had asked the boys if they were hurt, and when they had said they were not very much hurt, he had gone on without asking their names and addresses. The boys had later been taken to hospital, where they were treated as out-patients. The magistrate said the offence was a serious one. and defendant’s action was extraordinary. Counsel should warn him of the danger of losing his license. TWO MEN CHARGED WITH DRUNKENNESS. Richard Cole, a second offender for drunkenness, and Davis Johnston, a third offender, met in town on Thursday and both had too much to drink. Both appeared in the Magistrate’s Court charged with drunkenness. They pleaded guilty, Sub-Inspector D. A. Mac Lean remarking that each had a long list. Cole having been fined the previous day for drunkenness. Each was fined 20s and was ordered to pay costs.
