DRAMA LEAGUE FESTIVAL

JUNIOR COMPETITIONS NEXT MONTH EXTENSION TO THREE DAYS POSSIBLE It is anticipated that at least 12 teams will be entered for the coming junior festival to be conducted by the South Canterbury Drama League at Timaru, and that three sessions will be necessary. This Information was given by Mr W. G. Tweedy to a meeting of the executive of the league, which considered the prospects for the festival to be bright. Dr. W. H. Unwin was in the chair. It was decided that the festival should be held on July 16 and 17, and, if necessary, also on July 18, all the sessions to be in the evening. The meeting decided to request Mr C. H. Marris, of Wellington, again to

judge the written original one-act play competition. The secretary (Mr H. L. Warsaw) reported that two further replies had been received to the league’s circular inviting an expression of opinion about a proposal to institute A and B grade sections at the main festival. Up to the present four clubs favoured the B grade being included, three considered that the festival should be conducted on the usual lines, and two were neutral. It was decided that the grading of the teams should not be considered this year. COUCILLOB’S PROTEST WALKS OUT OF MEETING ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN CAUSES FEELING In the absence of the Mayor, Mr A. W, Buzan, and the deputy-Mayor, Councillor W. F. Evans, the filling of the Mayoral chair gave rise to some discussion at the meeting of the Temuka Borough Council last evening. Cr. J. Gourley claimed that as the only chairman of a committee present, he should occupy the chair, but other councillors were of the opinion that Cr. W. H. Macmillan, at the request of the Mayor, and as senior councillor, should have the honour. Eventually Cr. Gourley left the meeting as a protest. , „ _ _ The matter arose when Cr. C. D.

Hayhurst moved, and Cr. J. King sec-, onded, that Cr. Macmillan take the chair. Cr. Gourley said he objected to the way the position of chairman had been “hawked” around the town. The proper procedure was to leave it to the council to decide and he, as chairman of the committee and the only chairman present, should occupy the chair. As a protest against his being Ignored he would leave the room. Cr. Macmillan asked Cr. Gourley to listen to his statement, and he could then do as he liked. Cr. Macmillan

said he had been no party to the alleged “hawking” of the position and knew nothing of the matter until the Mayor told him that neither himself nor the deputy-Mayor would be able to attend the meeting. He had asked Cr. Macmillan to take the chair. Cr. Macmillan had told the Mayor that if it would help him in any way he would do so. Cr. Gourley said that Cr. Macmillan was not the man to whom he referred. He then left the room and did not attend the meeting of the council.

COMPENSATION CLAIM FAILS ARBITRATION COURT SITS AT TIMARU Arthur Dawson, a threshing mill hand, sought compensation from a mill owner, A. G. Saunders, of Pleasant Point, at a sitting of the Arbitration Court in Timaru yesterday, claiming that he had suffered injury to a hand during his work, which, combined with the strain of lifting sacks of wheat, had incapacitated him for five weeks and five days. His Honour Mr Justice Page presided, and associated with him were Messrs A. L. Monteith and W. Cecil Prime, assessors. Mr A. D. Mcßae appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr W. D. Campbell for the defendant. After evidence had been heard, his Honour said that it was found that the disability did not arise from a knock on the hand by a bar of iron, but was due to the cumulative effects of the strain which had been set up by his work, and which had caused him to give it up. This was not consistent under the Workers Compensation Act. Judgment was therefore entered for the defendant, to whom costs would be allowed if applied for. PROBATE GRANTED His Honour Mr Justice Northcroft has granted probate in the following estates:—Martha S. Bradford (Timaru '. Jane McKay Radford (Temuka), Mary Mcßae (Timaru), Selina McDougall (Timaru). Ernest Henry Waller (Gapes Valley), Letters of administration were granted in the estate of Abraham Smith (Riverside).
