GIFT PARTIES

Miss Avril Kearney (“Omarama,” Akcroa), whose marriage will take place next Tuesday, was entertained at a “linen” gift party given by Miss Eileen McKay. Games and progressive bridge were played, the winner being Miss Sutherland, and Miss Stephanie Armstrong won the consolation prize. Those present included Mrs F. L. Mrs W. Chambers and Miss Win. Hills were joint hostesses at a kitchen gift party given at Rangiora in honour of Miss Jean Rutherford, whose marriage will take place shortly. The time passed pleasantly with games and competitions, and after supper Mjss Rutherford was presented with many useful gifts for her future home.

Carter and Miss Elizabeth (Betty) Carter, who have left West Melton to live at Sumner, were entertained at a nleasant afternoon party held in the West Melton Hall. On arrival. Mrs Carter was presented with a bouquet of flowers by her grandson. Master W. Carter. The hall and supper tables were gaily decorated with greenery, chrysanthemums, and violas. Miss Trickett was responsible for the decorations. During the afternoon songs were sung by Miss P. Roper (Halkett), Mrs Green (Weedons), pianoforte solos were played by Mrs Devonshire (Kirwee) and Miss Ruth Langdale-Hunt, and choruses were sung by the school children. The accompanists were Mrs Devonshire and Mrs W. Hayes. The Rev. Theo. Paterson said that Mr and Mrs Carter had spent more than 40 years in the district and the large gathering present testified to the esteem in which they were held. Miss Trickett, on behalf of the residents. presented a cheque to Mr and Mrs Carter, and a tray and afternoon tea set to Miss Carter. Miss Betty Carter, who had been organist at St. Paul’s Church for many years, was presented with a hymn and psalm book from the parishioners of St. Paul’s Church. The Rev. W. H. Hine made the presentation. During the afternoon a competition was won by Mrs C. McKay (Halkett). Those present included Mr and Mrs F. Carter, Miss Betty Carter, Miss C. Henderson. Mr and Mrs A. G. - Members of St Matthew’s‘Nursing Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade gathered together to say good-bye to one of their popular members, Miss Agnes Burke, whose marriage will take place shortly. Miss Conway, lady superintendent, conveyed to Miss Burke the best wishes of members and presented her with a bouquet of chrysanthemums and a handsome crystal rose bowl. The lady district officer (Mrs Bishop) also spoke. Those present were Miss Agnes Burke, Mrs Bishop, Miss Conway, Miss Cruden, Mesdames Wood, Quirk, Gibson, Misses Mur row. Meyer, Fraer, Stubberfield, Ward, Coler, Shannon, Tipler, McCormack, Foster, Richards, and C. Hanrahan. COMING-OF-AGE PARTY At the home of Mr and Mrs W. V. Rowan about 40 friends gathered on the occasion of a surprise party in honour of the coming-of-age of Mr C. Watson. Mr A. J. Inwood presented to Mr Watson a travelling rug with the good wishes of his friends. Musical items were given by Mrs Rowan, Misses E. Eggelton. Marie Nidd Dorothy Hill, Messrs Suckling. A competition was won by Miss Patterson. PARTY AT GRAIN’S BAY At the Okain s Bay Hall, the scholars of St. John s Sunday school held their annual fancy dress party. The proceeds of the evening were for the Sunday school prize fund. DANCE AT LITTLE RIVER The Little River Football Club held a dance at the Town Hall to raise ufnds for the club. Music for the dancing was played gratis by a number of the residents. Lucky-spot dances were won by Miss L. Sparkes and Mr J. Reed. Miss Eileen Rae and Mr M. Macpherson. A competition for a mystery parcel was won by Mrs S. Barclay. The club will benefit by £6 10s.
