HOUSING SCHEME
PROPOSAL FOR NEW BRIGHTON NORTH BEACH PROGRESS LEAGUE’S DISCUSSION Mr E. A. M. Leaver presided at the monthly meeting of the North Beach Progress League and Beautifying Association held last evening. Regret was expressed at the death of Mrs Bucks, who for many years was a member of the Progress League and had taken an active part in the affairs of the district The chairman reported that the executive had considered a housing scheme for New Brighton, and suggested that the New Brighton Borough Council be approached to r ure assistance from the Government to erect a number of houses in th~ borough. The executive’s proposals were that the council se*ect suitable blocks large enougli for building 20 houses in each block. There was a great demand for houses in the district. Mr L. R. Moore said that he did not consider the present Government would lend money for a housing scheme in New Brighton while the borough was without a high-pressure water scheme, underground drainage, and an efficient fire-protection services.
Mr A. Peverell said that the Government had said definitely that it would not lend any money for persons to build houses unless they lived in them. After further discussion it was resolved that the New Brighton Borough Council be urged to take full advantage of the Government’s housing scheme.
