OFFICIAL FORECASTS [TBB PRESS Special Ssrrlce.] WELLINGTON. June 16. The Dominion Observatory’s weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 pan., and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: Variable winds, southerlies prevailing at first, but later southwest to west; moderate mainly, but squally at times. Weather changeable, but mainly cloudy to overcast, with scattered rains. Temperatures cold. Seas moderate to rather rough, and Increasing. The following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather unsettled and squally, with further rain in most districts. Some heavy fails between the Cook Strait area and East Cape, but otherwise mainly showery. Temperatures cold, with snow on the ranges. A rather deep depression has been crossing the Dominion to-day, its centre this afternoon being south of Gisborne. An Intense anti-cyclone still covers Australia and the western Tasman Sea; but a secondary depression is passing Tasmania. Winds—Variable at first in the southern half of the South Island, otherwise south-easterly to southwesterly prevailing, moderate to strong generally and of gale force at places. Seas (New Zealand waters) —Rough to high north of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura; elsewhere rather rough to rough. Eastern Tasman—Strong southerly winds and rough seas. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER V Yesterday was cold and cloudy in the city. A light south-west wind in the morning gave way to an easterly in the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 48 degrees. At 1 o’clock this morning the weather was clear, with an easterly breeze. The temperature was 40 degrees. The barometer was steady at 29.90 inches. IN OTHER PLACES Auckland —Yesterday the weather was wet, with a moderate to fresh and squally westerly wind. Heavy showers fell during the early morning and late in the afternoon. The barometer fell to 29.50 inches and then remained steady. Wellington—The weather yesterday was cold anjj wet, rain falling almost continuously. There was a strong and squally south-south-easterly wind. The maximum temperature was 48.2 degrees. The rainfall between 9 a.m. and 3 p.n.. was 19 points. Dunedin —There was bright sunshine yesterday morning, but the sky became overcast in the afternoon, and toward evening a slight fog covered the lower parts of the city. There was little wind, and temperatures were cold. The barometer fell throughout the day, last night’s reading being 29.85 inches.
