WINTER COMPETITION SIXTH ROUND PLAYED ON SATURDAY The winter competition of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association was continued on Saturday afternoon at Wilding Park, when the sixth round was played. Although there was a cold northeasterly wind and the day was overcast, the round was completed. The following were the results:— SECTION I. AVONSIDE A v. LINWOOD A Singles—P. C. Burnett beat E. R. Mahan, 6-4, 6-5; E. G. McGregor lost to P. J. pell, 4-6, 6-4, 4-6; T. M. L, Jones lost to A. Rutledge, 5-6, 2-6; H. A. Booth beat R. Beverley, 6-4, 6-4. Doubles—Burnett and McGregor beat Bell and Mahan, 6-3, 6-3; Jones and Booth v. Rutledge and Beverley, 6-3 (unfinished). Avonside won by 8 sets to 4. ELMWOOD A v. NEW BRIGHTON Singles—B. E. Souter beat M. McGillivray, 6-4, 6-2; L. J. Broughton lost to K. T. Hardie, 3-6, 6-4, 3-6; J. Mosley lost to H. Rainey, 6-4, 5-6, 5-6; E. Ferguson beat F. Heald, 6-1, 6-4. Doubles—Souter and Broughton beat McGillivray and Hardie, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4; Mosley and Ferguson lost to Rainey and Heald, 3-6. Elmwood won by 8 sets to 5. CASHMERE v. NORTH BEACH Singles—J. Silvester beat D. Meier, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3; V. Clemens lost to L. Meier, 6-6, 4-6; T. MacFarlane beat B. Diehl, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4; B. Douglas lost to L. Hadley, 5-6, 4-6. ALBANS Singles—W. Jury lost to A. Foster, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6; W. Chrystal beat J.. K. Haberfield, 6-1, 4-6, 6-5; W. Downing lost to M. Foster, 5-6, 1-6; F. S. Barraclough lost to L. Boschetti, 5-6, 2-6. Doubles —Jury and Downing lost to Foster and Foster, 3-6, 5-6; Chrystal and Barraclough beat Haberfield and Boschetti, 6-2, 6-2. St. Albans won by 4 matches to 2. ELMWOOD B v. SOUTH CHRISTCHURCH Singles—G. W. Flint lost to W. Welsh, 3-6, 6-2, 5-6; W. P. Jones lost to H. Boniface. 4-6, 6-3, 4-6: W. K. Steven lost to I. Scully 1-6, 5-6; D. Bannehr beat A. Adams, 6-0, 6-1. Doubles— Flint and Steven lost to Welsh and Boniface, 4-6 6-3, 4-6; Jones and Bannehr lost to Scully and Adams, 1-6 6-3, 2-6. South Christchurch won by 5 matches to 1. AVONSIDE B v. Handisidcs, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. Doubles— Sharp and Hill beat Consedmc and N. Watson, 6-3, 6-3; Percy and Millar beat L. Watson and Handisides, 1-6, 6-o, G~5. Avonside won by 5 matches to 1.

AMERICA RETAINS WIGHTMAN CUP

BRITISH WOMEN BEATEN (UNITED PRESS ISSOCIATION — COI’TRIGHT.) (Received June 14. 8.45 p.m.) LONDON, June 13. The Wightman Cup contest between women's lawn tennis teams representing Britain and the United States, was won by the American players, who thus retain the cup. The winners led at the end by four matches to three. In the singles, Miss K. Stammers (Great Britain) beat Miss Helen Jacobs (United States). 12-10, 6-1. and Miss Dorothy .Round (Great Britain) beat Mrs M. Fabyan, 6-3, 6-4. In the doubles, Miss C. Babcock and Mrs J. van Ryn (United States) beat Misses E. M. Dearman and N. M. Lyle (Great Britain), 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Miss Stammers, fighting gallantly from 0-3, led 5-4 and 6-5 on service in her match with Miss Jacobs. Miss Jacobs, exploiting her fierce forehand powers, retrieved her position and went ahead 9-8. Miss Stammers forced her way to 10-9. but Miss Jacobs, volleying magnificently, saved the set points. She twice aced Miss Stammers, levelling the scores at 10-10. Miss Stammers was undaunted and volleyed and served her way to 11-10 when rain suspended play for half an hour. After that Miss Jacoh did not regain touch. Mrs Fabyan beat Miss Stammers, 6-3, 6-4; Miss Round beat Miss Jacobs, 6-3, 6-3; Miss Babcock beat Miss Hardwick, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Miss Jacobs and Mrs Fabyan beat Miss Stammers and Miss James, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5. The British defeat was due to Miss Stammers’s inconsistency. She did not reproduce yesterday’s brilliance, especially against Mrs Fabyan, and was also very erratic in the doubles when she lost the service at 4-4. Miss Jacobs, after her two defeats, rallied magnificently in the doubles.

THE DAVIS CUP IRELAND ELIMINATED BY GERMANY SEMI-FINAL OF EUROPEAN ZONE (Received June 14, 8.22 p.m.) BERLIN, June 13. In' the semi-final of the Davis Cup European zone, Germany eliminated Ireland. Von Cramm and Henkel beat Rogers and McVeagh, 6-0, 6-1, 6-4. In the singles, von Cramm beat Rogers. 6- 6-2, 6-3; Henkel beat McVeagh, 6-1, 8-6, 6-2. MATCHES AT VIENNA (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.) (Received June 14, 8.29 p.m.) VIENNA. June 13. Puncec (Jugoslavia) beat von Metaxa (Austria), 6-4, 6-3, 6-1; Pallada (Jugoslavia) beat Bawarowski, 3-6, 5-4, 6-3, 3-6, 7TUCKEY INJURED (Received June 14, 8.27 p.m.) LONDON, June 13. While practising, the Davis Cup player, Tuckey, fell, injuring his-right ankle. The injury may prevent his playing at Wimbledon.
