WORKERS' EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION
PUBLIC SPEAKING CLASS AT NEW BRIGHTON There was a record attendance at the weekly meeting of the New Brigh. ton public speaking class of the Workers’ Educational Association held in the New Brighton District High School last evening. Mr C. Gordon Evans presided. The tutor, Mr A. A. Dingwall, took “emphasis” as the subject of his address, stressing its importance as an aid to giving meaning to speech. The subject debated was “That immigration is a good policy for New Zealand,” the affirmative being led by Mr F. J. Bromley, and the negative by Mr A. B. Grant. Other speakers were Messrs B. H. McLaren and Burley (affirmative), and Messrs J. D. Last and C. H. Walter (negative). On the motion of Mr J. Venner, the debate was adjourned until next week. The offer of Mr F. J. Bromley to give an address upon Samoa at the next meeting wr~ accepted. The Young Women’s Christian Association debating class wrote accepting a challenge to a debate, and nominating “That man derives greater pleasure from hope than from memory” as the subject. It was decided to take the affirmative, and the selection of the team was left to the tutor. A letter was received from the Prime Minister' (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) thanking the class for its congratulations upon the Government’s action in broadcasting parliamentary debates, and assuring the class that the practice would be continued.
