COUNCIL AND CAUSEWAY ROAD MAIN HIGHWAY BOARD’S PROPOSALS Proposals made by the-Main Highways Board for completing the causeway road at McCormacks Bay were received by the Heathcote County Council last evening in a letter from the board. The council discussed the proposals briefly and then passed a motion saying that as the road did not serve the county or the ratepayers, the council was not interested. The letter from the Highways Board said the estimated cost for work yet to be done on the road was £3IOO. This provided for the building of two bridges, and for metalling and sealing. The bo|ard said it was prepared to subsidise the work at the rate of £2 for £1 for the bridges, estimated to cost £I2OO, and £3 for £1 for the metalling and sealing, estimated at £I3OO and £ 600 respectively, if conference of | the local bodies concerned was sug-j gested. j “This is a matter in which we i should take a decided stand,” de- j dared Cr, A. G. Williams. “If the i causeway is declared a highway we will lose the subsiy on our own road.” Cr. W. Kerr: I have said that from the beginning. It was a bad job right through. The chairman, Cr. W. W. Scarff, said that the road had really represented an effort by the Unemployment Board to.do something for unemployed men. “We should let them know that it will be of no advantage whatever to us,” Cr. Williams said. He moved:— “That as the cduseway road does not serve any part of the county or the interests of the ratepayers, the proposals of the Highways Board do not interest |he council.” The motion was carried unanimously. ________
