ACCIDENTS
STRUCK FROM BEHIND BY LORRY WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED Struck from behind by a truck on the Main Souht road, near the Hornby Recreation Ground, last evening, Mrs A. H. Davis, aged 68 years, of Hornby, was thrown to the ground and received shock and severe scalp wounds.
Mrs Davis and another woman were walking arm-in-arm along the Main South road in a south-westerly direction about 7.20 last evening, when the left front mudguard of a light delivery truck, driven by Albert Hopkins, of Tinwald, struck her and she was thrown to the ground. She was thrown clear of the truck, however, and no part of it passed over her body. Hopkins was returning to Tinwald after a visit to Christchurch. The St. John Ambulance was summoned, and Mrs Davis was brought in to the Christchurch Public Hospital, where she was admitted at 8.10 p.m. Her condition late last evening was still serious.
CAR STRIKES BRIDGE OCCUPANTS THROWN INTO CREEK U'UISS ASSOCIATION TBOXiIUAU.) DANNEVIRKE. June 11. While being driven from Dannevirke to a dance at Woodville last evening a car containing four Dannevirke and two Kiritaki residents struck a concrete bridge on the main road about four miles from Woodville. The car remained where it struck, but the occupants are reported to have all been shot into a creek containing several feet of wafer. They were rescued by the driver of the car, Cyril Albert White, who was unhurt, and a motorist who was following. Only one person was seriously injured, a youth, Trevor Drinkwater, of Dannevirke, breaking a leg. The other members of the party, including two young women, suffered from abrasions and shock.
MOTOR-CYCLIST KILLED ANOTHER MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED U’RISS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) NEW PLYMOUTH, June 11. One man was killed and another seriously injured at Oakura to-night They were found lying on the road near their damaged motor-cycle in circumstances that suggested that they had been struck by a car. The dead man was Leonard Blanchard, a farm hand employed in the district. Thomas Jury, also a young farm hand, was admitted to hospital with injuries to the legs and chest. He is in a serious condition. The police have not yet traced any other vehicle involved in a collision.
INJURIES LESS SERIOUS THAN FEARED (F8133 ASSOCIATION TTCLIGKAit.) WELLINGTON, June 11. The injuries to the eyes suffered by Mr Ward, second officer of theTamahine. when a Holmes light exploded in his face,, are not so serious as were at first fear. L and he is not expected to remain long in hospital.
