GREYMOUTH HOSPITAL BOARD MEETS [THE PRESS Special, Service.] GREYMOUTH. June 11. At the monthly meeting of the Grey Hospital Board, Mr J. Smeaton, who has been acting-chairman of the board during the illness of Mr R. McTaggart, was elected chairman for the ensuing two years, Unopposed.' The chairman’s honorarium was fixed at £SO a year. Mr A. Mosley was reappointed chairman of the hospital committee for the ensuing 12 months. It was decided that the chairman of the board be the chairman of the finance committee. It was decided to suggest to the Minister for Health that in future the election of the board chairman should be held annually, and to forward a remit to that effect to the annual conference of hospital boards. The following recommendations of the hospital committee were adopted: —That the medical superintendent be empowered to arrange for the appointment of a house surgeon at a salary not to exceed £300; that the board advertise for a qualified bacteriologist, the appointment to be left in the hands of the medical superintendent, salary to be according to experience, but not to exceed £350 a year; that a grounds committee, consisting of Messrs F, F. Boustridge, A. H. McKane, and A. Mosley, be appointed, and that a policy of groanc’s maintenance be formulated and reported to the next meeting Of the board. Messrs Smeaton and Robinson were appointed a, visiting committee for the ensuing month. A petition was received from more than 40 residents of the Hohonu riding, in the Grey County, asking the board’s favourable consideration of a grant to the Kumara Medical Club, of at least £SO. to increase the retainer from £250 to £3OO in an endeavour to secure a resident doctor at Kumara. The petition was presented in conjunction with a deputation from the Kumara Medical Club. After a long discussion it was decided that a grant of £4O be made. Harbour ‘Board v *The annual meeting of the Greymouth Harbour Board was held recently. In his annual report the chairman (Mr P. J. McLean) said that for 1935-36 the gross receipts from all sources totalled £28.995 15s 2d. Of this £2625 was subsidy and £2205 11s lid special rate on coal, the balance being ordinary revenue. The expenditure under all heads totalled £23,351 19s 4d, of which £4756 2s Id was on capital works and £18,535 17s 3d ordinary. The board was £3643 15s lOd better off at the close of the year than at the beginning. Through the special act of Parliament, the board was placed on a new footing, having no loan liability, and having

lost the annual subsidy of £15,000 agreed upon when the board’s interest in the Grey-Brunner railway was surrendered as an endowment. Under the provisions of the act the board was to be made partly elective from the date of the next municipal and county elections. The exports for the year were:— Timber 34,226,781 super, feet, an increase of 3,674,810 super, feet, and coal 169,360 tons, an increase of 129 tons 14cwt. The year’s actual trade increased by 10,383 tons, or 4.24 per cent, compared with 1934-35. The engineer (Mr D. C. Milne), in his annual report said that the total output of stone from the quarry was 30,279 tons, and 10,658 tons was deposited on the breakwaters. During the year the work of the breakwaters in effecting an improvement in bar depth had been clearly demonstrated, when, during the recent shoaling, 130,000 tons of material was removed from the bar and entrance channel during 11 ebb tides. The ordinary monthly meeting of the board was held subsequent to the annual meeting. The Greymouth Borough Council submitted alternative proposals for the filling in of the pond at Packer’s quay, Blaketown, but the board decided to adhere to its original offer to spend £6OO to fill*in the pond, provided the council would give the board the rights over the roadway. The estimates for the ysar 1936-37 were approved, a summary being as follows:—Receipts £19,840, cr. balance harbour fund account £1754 14s, total cash available £21,594 14s. Expenditure £21,295 2s. cr. balance March 3, 1936, £299 12s. Fixed deposits of £3OOO are not included in the above, being

treated as a reserve. The harbourmaster (Captain F. W. Cox) reported that the average depths of water for the month were:—Bar 25ft 7in. river 21ft lOin. The finance committee reported that fixed deposits amounted to £ and that the harbour fund account had a credit balance of £1690 8s lOd. Main School Jubilee There was again a small attendance at the public meeting called to make arrangements for the celebration of the Grey Main School diamond jubilee in October next, this being commented upon adversely by the chairman of the committee (Mr A. E. Morgan) and the secretary (Mr C. V. Black). It was decided to approach Messrs A. H. Wilde. C. Neville, and O. McLean about the organising of the celebrations. The following officers were elected: — Patron, Mr G. E. Perkins; president, Mr P. J. McLean: vice-president, Mr W. Meldrum. It was decided that endeavours be made to get in touch with old boys cf the school throughout New Zealand, by means of radio notices. League Football Mr A. H. McKane presided at the weekly meeting of the management committee of the West Coast Rugby League, when advice was received from the Greymouth Trotting Club that, following upon the league’s rejection of the terms for the use of the ground at Victoria Park, it had been closed for all football, including practice. Challenges by the Runanga Club for all trophies, in all grades, were accepted and filed for reference. The New Zealand Council advised that the South Island selector, Mr J. Amos, would be present at the West Coast v. Inangahua representative match, at Reeiton, on June 23, and I also that players for the South Island team were to be nominated by the leagues. The sending of a third grade team ' to Christchurch, to play on August 1, was referred to the finance committee

Junior Grade: Blackball v Kumara, at Kumara; Runanga v. Pirates, at Dunollie. Third Grade: Marist v. Brunner, at Wingham Park: Runanga v. Pirates, at Wingham Park Fourth Grade: Marist v. Runanga, ai Wingham Park. Schoolboys (Saturday): Blackball v. Runanga, at Dunollie. Rugby Football Mr J. Guy presided at the weekly meeting of the management committee of the West Coast Rugby Union. It was decided to close the fourth grade competition and to begin a new one next week-end, with five teams, Technical A and B, Cobden, United, and Main School. Permission was granted to the Celtic Club to have the sole rights for the representative match programmes, the same as last year. The Athletic Club (Christchurch) wrote asking for matches to be arranged for second and fifth grade teams at. Greymouth on June 23. It was decided to arrange games with teams from the Celtic Club. The South Westland Sub-Union advised that Mr T. P. Ryan had been appointed delegate to the West Coast Union. Messrs F. Eggleton, jun., and G. Hughes were appointed third grade selectors, and it was decided that the third grade representative team bo selected on June 20. On the application of the United Club G. Swinbum and R. Harvey were reclassified from senior to junior. The following arrangements and appointments were made for next Saturday’s representative game:—Manager of Greymouth team, Mr W. Williams; manager for Inangahua team, Mr F, Eggleton; captain, G. Gilbert; vicecaptain. E. Collins. Greymouth team to assemble at the Park Hotel at 1.45 p.m. The fixtures for the week-end are:— Senior representative match, Greymouth v. Inangahua, at Rugby Park. Junior Grade: Blaketown v. Personal On the completion of his fiftieth year of service with the company, as moulder. Mr A. T. Boddy, of the staff of the Dispatch Foundry Company, Greymouth, was presented with a cheque. Mr Boddy became apprenticed to the moulding trade in the foundry at the age of 13' years, and has been foreman-moulder for many years. During his long service he has lost legs than six weeks’ work through illness. Mrs N. Weenink has returned from a visit to Sydney and Melbourne. Mr Justice Northcroft left to-day on return to Christchurch. Mr J. Ryall has been re-elected unopposed as a member of the Westland Land Board.

HOKITIKA WESTLAND HOSPITAL BOARD [THE PRESS Special Service.] HOKITIKA. June 11. The meeting of the Westland Hospital Board was held recently, when Mr T. W. Duff was re-elected chairman for a further period. Members stood .in silence as a mark of respect to Mr W. E. Williams. The chairman reported on interviews he and the secretary had had with Ministers in Wellington recently. Subsidy on the proposed works loan wjjb

After discussion concerning the loan, it was decided to borrow from the New Zealand Governrfient State Fire and Accident Insurance Office a further sum of £2OOO, in addition to the £SOOO previously authorised, at the same rate and on the same terms, and that an amount as required not exceeding £BOOO be obtained from the National Bank of New Zealand at current rate upon the security of £IO,OOO of the board’s 3i per cent, debentures. The appointment of Mr Trengrove as architect for the building programme was approved. The secretary reported that arrangements were being made for a medical agreement with the board. Deer bulling Two officers of the Department of Internal Affairs, Captain G. F. Yerex and Mr Barrow, have been interviewing members of the Kokatahi Farmers’ Union about deer in districts where these animals hjive been causing damage. It is said that culling operations will be begun in about four months’ time and will extend from Lewis Pass to the Whitcombe river. ,
