BURST PUMPING MAIN
INSPECTION OF DAMAGE AT LINWOOD AVENUE DIFFICULT AND COSTLY WORK INVOLVED An inspection of tne damage caused by the bursting of a 24 ii.ch pumping main leading to the Christchurch Drainage Board’s sewage farm at Bromley was carried out by officers of the board yesterday, at the centre of the road, at the corner of Linwood avenue and Buckley’s road. On Tuesday morning the surface of the road had subsided and interference was caused to tram traffic. After the inspection. Mr J. Cullens, engineer to the board, said the pipe had been fractured, probably by the vibrations set up by tram and motor traffic on the wet sand I_. that local-? ity. The work of repairing the damage would be difficult and fairly costly because of the necessity of emptying the main of its contents. He estimated that two or three days’ labour would be required. Mr Cullens said that the pipe was in excellent condition, apart from the fracture, although it had been laid down 53 years ago.
