NEW BRIGHTON FIRE BRIGADE

ANNUAL BALL HELD The twenty-eighth annual ball of the New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade, held in the Pier Hall, New Brighton, last evening, was an outstanding success. The credit for the smooth arrangements is due to a small but energetic social committee consisting of Firemen A. J, Cockle, A. E. Nesbitt, and Treasurer R. F. Stokes. The supper-room was suitably decorated with flowers. The, music was played by Wilson’s Melody Makers. The masters of ceremonies were Deputy-Superintendent C. H. Stokes and Fireman J. B. Gott. OBITUARY »• MRS S. LEMON A long lifetime of service in the interests of her family and of the district in which she lived was brought to a close with the death recently of Mrs Lemon, widow of Mr Samuel Lemon, of Killinchy. Mrs Lemon, who was 93 years of age, was born in Garnaghey, County Tyrone, Ireland. She came to New Zealand in the ship Bluejacket, landing at Lyttelton 70 years ago, in the early days of settlement. At that time the Journey from Lyttelton to Christchurch was made by the Bridle Path. After spending three years in Christchurch, Mrs Lemon (formerly Miss Martha Camac) settled at Killinchy,. where her marriage to Mr S. Lemon took place in 1872. After living for some time on the farm now occupied by Mr W. J. Lemon, on the Leeston-Killinchy road, Mrs Lemon moved with her husband to the wellknown property on Drain road, between Doyleston and Killinchy, where she remained for the rest of her life. At that time, large areas of Killinchy were covered with swamp and flax. There were practically no formed roads and the principal means of transport was the horse and dray. Mrs Lemon played her part worthily as a pioneer settler, establishing a reputation* as a butter and cheese maker.

The death qf her husband left her with a young family to care for, as well as the management of the farm, but courage 'and determination, coupled with a sound knowledge of the principles of farming, enabled her to make good. • During the Great War Mrs Lemon performed splendid work in the interests of the soldiers, among other work, knitting three pairs of socks every week for several years. She was always held in affectionate regard by neighbours for miles around because of her fine personal qualities, practical sympathy, and ready help in times of sickness or bereavement She was always a staunch member of the Presbyterian Church, and one who took a very keen interest in all its activities, i%id especially in the building of a church at Killinchy, being selected for the honour of laying the foundation stone. Mrs Lemon is survived by a family of three daughters and two sons. The daughters are Mrs J. McVinnie (Springston), and Misses M. and C. Lemon, and the sons, Messrs F. and L. C. Lemon. There are 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grand-children. LADY SHACKLETON (UNITED PKIBS AIBOCIITIOK—COPTBIGHT.) LONDON. June 9. The death has occurred of Lady Shackleton, widow of the famous British Antarctic explorer. ADDRESS BY DR. NOLA IVORY An address, unique in character add interest, was given last evening in the Oxford Terrace Baptist Sunday School by Dr. Nola Ivory, of the New Zealand Baptist Missionary Society’s hospital at Chandpur, East Bengal, Dr. Ivory is the only lady doctor ip a district where the population includes 300,000 Hindu and Mohammedan women, to whom, by the law of “purdah,” medical attention is forbidden, unless given by a woman.
