EMPLOYEES BEING RECRUITED
SHOP ASSISTANTS’ UNION Recruiting on a wholesale basis among employees of retail firms in Christchurch has been begun by several unions concerned, since the passing of the Arbitration and Conciliation Bill by the Legislative Council. Drapery firms provide a large field for organising work, and, in addition to approaching the workers, the unions have circularised the employers. Drapery firms have received the following letter from the secretary of t’ i Christ-, church Retail Shop Assistants’ Union (Mr J. S. Barnett):— “The Arbitration and Conciliation Bill, having passed the Legislative Chamber, it is now only a matter of days before it becomes law. It will then be necessary for the members of your staff, or employees, who come within the scope of the Retail Shop Assistants’ Award, to become members of the Christchurch Retail Shop Assistants’ Union. “I am anxious that the process of enrolment should be effected with the least possible inconvenience to your establishment, and should be glad to confer with you. In the meantime, I should be glad if you would supply me with the names of your employees.”
