LINE UMPIRES NEEDED

REPRESENTATIVE BASKETBALL GAMES [By SHOOT.] Offers are being called for line umpires. It is thought that in the senior games at least they are necessary, and as experienced line umpires will be needed at the Dominion tournament, offers from players or former players will be welcomed by the secretary. Representative Players Junior B possible representatives have been chosen as follows: —M. Adams (Te Kura), N. Austin (International Models), M. Birtwhistle (A.8.C.), E. Carter (Technical), V. Calvert (Ngaio), B. Cullen (Rangers), N. Fraser (Rangers), F. Forsey (A.8.C.), E. Hobbs (Orama), R. Henderson (Te Kura), F. McLean (Rangers), O. McPherson (A.8.C.), R, Mills (A.8.C.), G. Langford (Kowhai), J. Pedler (International Models). A Comfortable Win Training College had a comfortable win' over St. Mary’s on Saturday, the score being 13-8. It was Training College’s game throughout, and had the forwards been quicker in preventing the ball from passing through their third and out over the end line, the team would have won by a bigger margin. With R. Stephenson on top form in defence, the St. Mary’s forwards found it difficult to secure the ball. In the first half of the Technical A versus Technical B game, the B team held its own surprisingly well, and at half-time was only three points behind the A team. The A team made a good recovery in the second spell, however, and won by 17-5. For the B team M. Simpson played a splendid game and T. Kerr did some good work in the centre. M. Fancy in the A defence played her usual energetic game and made some splendid saves. F. Southen and T. Hawkins were'not deterred by the absence of the third centre player and with little apparent effort kept their forwards well supplied. Practised combination won the match for University again A.B.C. The passing movements were short and fast and the A.B.C. players were unable to intercept effectively. The score was 12-5. Players and Referees There is some misunderstanding concerning the ruling for ordering players oft the field and players should note the following:—The referee may order a player to leave the court for (a) Deliberate violent play; (b) Continued violation of rules; (c) Striking an opponent: (d) Objectionable remarks; (e) Unregistered costume. The referee shall order a player to leave the court only when he is satisfied that the ordinary penalty is insufficient to meet the case, and, except in extreme cases, only after a warning. He shall have power to stand a player off the field for a specified part of the game. Queen Carnival The queen carnival is progressing satisfactorily. The Corsair queen is heading the list with 1524 votes. Next in order are Referees 1371, Hagley 1080, West 720, Technical 480, Northcote 360, Digby’s 360, and Ngaio 240. Hie carnival will close on Saturday, June 27, and the result will be announced at the Canterbury Basketball Union’s dance in July. Bean Ideal Cup Northcote once again heads the list with Te Kura running a close second. Points are as follows: —Northcote 99, Te Kura 97, Technical A 90, Beckenham 88, Orama 85, Hinemoa A 80. Corsair A 76, McKenzies 75, Rangers 74, Rawea TO.
