THE JOSEPH CONRAD Full-Rigged Ship Missing
The Joseph Conrad, the only square-rigged sailing ship in service flying the British flag, has not been heard of or seen since May 20, when it was sighted off Pencarrow Head, Wellington. Heavy planks and a mast stump have been Washed ashore at Porangahau, Hawke’s Bay,
#nd many people fear that the wreckage is part of the Joseph Conrad, as it was reported that a full-rigged ship was sighted off the coast on May 28, when heavy seas were running. Later it was reported that distress signals were seen by the ship Kartigi and by people on the shore. The ship is owned by the master, Alan Villiers, a former reporter on a Melbourne newspaper. He bought the Joseph Conrad, then the Georg Stage, in Denmark, two years ago. She was the smallest full-rigged ship ever built, and she had been used ever singe her launching in 1880 as a school ship for training officers of the merchant service.
