CURRENT NOTES

At the monthly meeting of the Ladies’ Guild of St. Cuthbert’s Church, Governor’s Bay, members of the guild and the vestry gathered to honour the Rev. and Mrs C. Maclaverty, who are leaving the district. The secretary, on behalf of the guild asked Mrs Maclaverty to accept a handsome rose bowl of crystal and a Victorian posy of flowers and Mr Maclaverty received a pipe from the vestry, Mr Robert Allen making the presentation.

Miss M. E. Shine, a trained nurse, has opened a bureau at “Marli” flats, Bealey avenue, for registered medical and surgical nurses and registered maternity nurses. Mrs A. C. Spencer (Adelaide, South Australia) will arrive in Christchurch this morning.

Miss Penelope Thompson (“Mount White,” Cass) is the guest of Miss Gwen Morgan, “The Pines,” Cheviot.

Mrs J. I. Goldsmith, J.P. (Wellington), who has been for a short visit to Dunedin, left Christchurch by aeroplane yesterday for Wellington.

Miss Myrtle Protheroe (Ashbur-ton),-who has been the guest of Miss Phyllis Trethewey (Lin wood avenue), has returned home.

Mrs A. M. Satterthwaite will leave to-day to spend a holiday at The Lodge, Hanmer Springs.

Visitors to Christchurch for the Watson-Coster wedding included Mr and Mrs R. Little (Hastings), Mrs S. J. Potts (Wellington), Mr and Mrs E. Glynan (Takaxnatua), and Mrs E. Smith (Wellington). Mr and Mrs A. C. Gardiner, formerly of Christchurch and Wellington and now of Auckland, left by the Aorangi for a visit to Vancouver, Banff, Toronto, and Montreal. Returning by the United States, they will visit New York, Chicago, Indianapolis, and Seattle, and will leave for the homeward voyage from Victoria, British Columbia.

Mrs D. Dwane, with her infant daughter, is the guest of her sisters, the Misses McDrury (“Ardglass Farm” Ladbrooks), for the McDrury■Redmond wedding. Miss Nancy Dutton, who has been visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs C. Dutton (Little River) has returned to Ashburton.

Miss Patricia Clowes is visiting friends in Wellington. Miss R. Blakely (Waikari) will leave to-day for a few weeks’ holiday. She will visit Mrs S. Goodman in Timaru and later Miss Humphries, Hull street, Oamaru. Mrs John Buchanan, accompanied by Mrs Erskine and Miss Erskine, will leave by the steamer express to-morrow to connect with the Monowai. They intend spending the winter months in Australia.

Mr and Mrs F. Haase (Sumner) will leave by the Remuera to-daw for a trip to England, and they* Wm also attend the Olympic .Games ’ in" Berlin.

Mrs T. Bassett (Belfast, Ireland), who recently returned to New Zealand, is now the guest of her daughter, Mrs R. M. Morten, “Ahuriri,” Tai Tapu. Mrs E. W. Inman, who was the guest of Mrs J. W. Woodhouse (Racecourse Hill) has returned to Fairlie.

Mr and Mrs Vesey Robinson (Ataahua), who have been spending a few days with Mr and Mrs J. A. Westenra (Ha warden), have returned home.

The engagement has been announced of Miss Jeane Elizabeth Mayo, youngest sister of Mrs C. L. Newton, to Norman Vernon Clarence, youngest son of the late Mr B. N. Conoski, and of Mrs Conoski, Richmond.

The engagement is announced of Kenneth Anthony, only son of Mr and Mrs W. A. White (Fendalton), and Wynn, younger daughter of Mrs A. Costello, St. Albans. To-morrow, being St. Barnabas' Day and patronal festival of the Melanesian Mission, Holy Communion will be celebrated in the Cathedral at 7.30 and 10 a.m., when special intercession will be offered on behalf of the Melanesian Mission, His Grace Archbishop Julius will be the celebrant at the second service.

A meeting of ladies who are assisting in the Anzac stamp campaign will be held in the Mayoress’s room to-morrow morning at 11 o’clock. Mrs Oakleigh Greenwood will preside. An enjoyable time was spent in the Selwyn street kindergarten, when the Spreydon Poppy Day helpers were entertained at a complimentary social. Cards, competitions, and dancing were enjoyed, and items were given by Miss Coombes, Messrs Tate and Parker. Mr Emerson, of the Returned Soldiers’ Association executive, thanked all who had assisted so willingly on Poppy Day.
