FIRE ESCAPES IN THE CITY

ORDERS NEGLECTED BY * SOME PROPERTY OWNERS

“If the instructions are not carried out, no doubt the board will have to take proceedings under the by-laws,’’ said the chairman of the Christchurch Fire Board, Mr T. M. Charters, at last evening’s meeting, when Superintendent C. C. Warner reported that some property owners in the city had made no provision for adequate fire escapes.

The superintendent reported that on April 1 a block plan system was inaugurated to ensure that a more systematic inspection of all buildings and fire escapes was being carried out and the results so far had proved very satisfactory. There were, however, one or two exceptions where owners were very lax in getting the work done as required bv the inspecting officer, and it might be necessary for the board to proceed against them in the Magistrate’s Court for non-compliance with the notices served under the by-laws for the provision of sufficient means of escape in case of fire. The number of buildings inspected during April and May was 121.
