N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS

CANTERBURY SUCCESSES

The New Zealand dog trial championships were held during the whole of last week at Hawera, and it was notable for the success of Mr R. M, Wilson, of Kirwee, with his three dogs —Mac, Miss Mac, and Fly. The trials drew competitors from Southland, Otago, different parts of Canterbury, and from both coasts of the North Island, there being no fewer than 104 dogs competing in the first event. Class 2—the championship short head and yarding competition—was a complete Canterbury success, the first, third, and fourth prizes going respectively to R. M. Wilson’s Mac (53 points), Fly (57 J points), and Miss Mac (57 points), the second prize being secured by H. White’s (Springfield) Gale (57£ points). The prizes were substantial, first being a silver tea service and tray, and £49 10s cash, second £24 15s, third £l2 7s 6d, and fourth £2.

In the New Zealand short head and yarding competition a North Island competitor—M. J. Wilson (Masterton) --was first, with 113| points, for two runs, but the Kirwee Wilson’s three dogs filled the next three places—Mac 112 points, Fly 1093 points. Miss Mac 109 i points, and H. White’s Gale fifth, with 109 points. Tile day of the short head was therefore a striking triumph for South Island dogs. The claim of the southerners that their dogs would do much better in the short head than they bad done in the long head, owing to not being accustomed to (he ring work, was fully justified. South Island dogs filled the first four places in the North Island championship out of seven and filled second, third, fourth, and fifth places in the first New Zealand short head championship. In a collie dog parade, there were 25 entries in the rough-coated class. H. White won with Ben, the prize be- , ing a £6 6s challenge cup. Mr Wilson has had a remarkably successful career at dog trials:—Cash totalling more than £9OO, more than 40 cups, including trophies won outright, miniatures, medals, etc., represented his winnings, before the championship trials at Hawera, with his two dogs Mac and Fly since he took up dog trial work some eight years ago. The remarkable successes achieved by his team of three heading dogs, in annexing first, third, and fourth in the North Island championship and second, third and fourth in the New Zealand champio.nship brought him an additional £65 7s 6d in cash and a silver tea service and tray. Mr Wilson has been interested in dog trials about eight years. - Mac is about 10i years of age, being bred by Mr Hampton, Lauriston. He wais broken in on the flat and never works high country, except at trials Miss Mac is by Mac. Mac and Fly have competed all over the South Island. Mac has won the South Island long head championship and was runnerup in the yarding championship. He has won about 50 first prizes and 80 or 90 places, while Fly has won 40 first prizes and numerous places. Miss Mac, who is two and a half years old, has been placed several times, including three times this year. Mr Wilson’s successes this year included 12 firsts and about 20 minor placings before the Hawera event.
