LADY KINSEY'S GIFTS

- PICTURES REMOVED TO ART GALLERY

WORKSHOP EQUIPMENT FOR UNIVERSITY

The paintings and etchings from the collection of Sir Joseph Kinsey which have been presented to the Christchurch City Council for the Robert McDougall Art Gallery were yesterday moved to their new home. The pictures were taken to the Art Gallery by two members of the special advisory committee to the Christchurch City Council, Mr Sydney M The Collection will be h "" g of the small bays in the art gallery, but as the pictures which already occupy this bay have to be moved to other parts of the bmldmg U will be several days before Pictoes are actually hung. A further delay will be caused by the necessity of reframing one or two of the Pictures. Asked whether there would be an official opening ceremony for the collection, Dr. Lester said that as far as he knew npne had yet been arranged, although this was m the hands of the City Council. . Lady Kinsey has now presented to Canterbury University College a quantity of valuable workshop equipment, and three ships bells, all of which were the property of Sir Joseph Kinsey. , , , The collection, which has been accepted by the Board of Governors, has much historical interest, for two of the articles have been to the Antarctic. These are cases, made of ttoeeply, and with zinc comers, and they were used by Captain R. F, Scott on his last expedition. The three ships’ bells have more than historical interest, for they are of distinct use in the laboratories. Professor S. Steele said yesterday that one was being installed in the electrical engineering laboratory, where time signals were required when several machines were being run at the same time, and when it was necessary to take a large number of readings simultaneously. Another of the bells is to be used in the steamengine laboratory, and the third will be used in the applied mechanics laboratory.
