SHADOWS IN THE MIST

TO THE EDITOR OP THE PRESS. Sir, —A curious phenomenon was witnessed on Sunday, while descending a spur adjacent to the Sugar Loaf, on the Governor’s Bay side of the Port Hills. The sun was directly behind us as we approached the belt of mist that thickly covered the harbour beneath us. At one point our shadows were cast vertically on the mist and were greatly magnified. A beam of light surrounded the head and shoulders. after the manner of a halo, on the outside of which was a rainbow encircling the greater portion of the shadow.

The most surprising fact we noticed was that although we were standing only four feet apart, each had a separate shadow, halo, and rainbow, which could not be seen by the other. We understand that similar phenomena have been seen on Mount Brocken, the Hartz mountains, in Germany, and also in other parts of New Zealand, but this is the first time we have heard of its being seen on the Port Hills.

We should appreciate any information as to why the rainbow, etc, should be seen, and, further, why each was unable to see the other’s “spectre.”—Yours, etc., TRAMPERS. June 8, 1936.
