A TRAVELLER’S EXPERIENCE

References to the methods used by Germans to overcome the restrictions on their taking money out of Germany was made' in an address on his travels by Mr Herbert Chapman, a former Rotarian, at a luncheon of the Rotary Club yesterday. He said that on the Aquitania he met a German who had invested in a new typewriter and several carpets, so that he could take his wealth to America in this form.

A German lady had said that she had to rely on the hospitality of her friends while abroad and repay them when they came to Germany.. He had been told by one man that he could have no conception of the amount of rearmament in Germany. If that of England were multiplied by 10 it would not be one-tenth of that in Germany. The whole population was being militarised. A German traveller told him that he would travel on French or British or Italian boats, but would rather swim than travel on a German boat. A vote of thanks was carried on the motion of Mr A. Keith Hadfield. Mr L. G. K. Steven presided.
