NO EXCLUSION OF PORK-BUTCHERS

# AWARD INTERPRETED BY ARBITRATION COURT

A plea for the exclusion of porkbutchers from the provisions of the general butchers’ award was rejected by his Honour Mr Justice Page, who presided on the first day of the Arbiration Court session in Christchurch yesterday. With his honour were Mr W. Cecil Prime (employers’ representative), and Mr A. L. Monteith (employees’ representative). J. H. Parsons, who was cited as a party to the butchers’ award, objected on the ground that as a pork-butcher he was in competition in small goods lines with grocers and others who were not restricted. While a butcher sold as small goods principally the leavings of his meat, a pork-butcher had to make his best cuts into small goods, so that overheads were much higher. Parsons also objected to the part of the award prohibiting female labour, saying that his costs would not permit him to carry on with male labour. Under the old award there had been separate provision for pork-butchers.

His Honour said that there was no alternative to adding Parsons to the award, which had been agreed upon by assessors, including pork-butchers. It was clearly provided that no female labour was to be employed.
