NEW TRAFFIC BRIDGE

STRUCTURE OVER TAYLOR RIVER [THE PRESS Special Service.] BLENHEIM, June 9. A letter was received from the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) by Mr E. P. Meachen, M.P., about the proposed - traffic bridge over the Taylor river at 1 the Burleigh crossing, in which an offer was made that, subject to funds being available this year, the Main Highways Board would find two-thirds of the cost of construction if the Marlborough County Council was prepared to meet the remaining portion. The tar-sealing of the remaining portion of the direct route to the Municipal aerodrome was mentioned in the letter which would be held over until after the completion of the bridge. The cost of sealing would be approximately £4500, and of building the bridge £7OOO, but both amounts are only tentative. Motor-car Leaves Road

The occupants of a five-seater motorcar, belonging to Mr C. M. Boon, of

Opouri Valley, had a narrow escape from serious injury while on their way to Blenheim to attend a wedding. The car left the road at McDowell’s

corner, on the Blenheim side of Havelock, and rolled down a steep bank. Mrs Boon unfortunately received leg in-

juries and was conveyed to a private hospital in Blenheim by Mr G. Higgins. of Havelock. The other members of the party were not injured and were able to proceed to Blenheim in aonther motor-car.

Fire in Stable

An outbreak of fire occurred on Saturday evening in an old stable in Percy street, which is owned by Mrs J. T. Murphy. The brigade was able to ex- I tinguish the flames before much damage was done. The racehorse, Jewish Lad, occupied one of the stalls in the stable, but was liberated and taken to safety. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. Rugby Football The results of Rugby matches played last Saturday are:—Senior grade: Moutere 29, Waitohi 3; Opawa 18, Awatere 3; Central 12, Carluke 3. Junior grade: Havelock 8, Central B 5; Waitohi 19, Old Boys 6; Moutere 17, Central A 3; Opawa 30, Awatere 3. Third grade: Waitohi 24, Central 3; Old Boys 23, Moutere 7; Carluke 9, Opawa 7. Senior women: Arotea 6, Beaver 1; Picton, a bye. Junior women; Arotea , S, Kowhai 0; Beaver 3, Picton 2. Golf Another inter-club match was played this week-end at the Fairhall links between the Marlborough Club and Picton. The Marlborough team won by 10 to 9, five matches finishing all square. Collie Dog Trials The Awatere Collie Dog Trial Association concluded its annual trials at Seddon. The standard was high throughout. The judge was Mr W. Gill, of Kaikoura.
