FAIR RENTS BILL AMENDED AND PASSED

(FKJSSS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, June 9. In the Legislative Council, three days’ leave of absence was granted to the Hon. C. J. Carrington and the Hon. J. Gcodall on account of illness. The Council went into committee on the Fair Rents Bill. The leader of the Council, the Hon. M, Fagan, moved an amendment providing for landlords and tenants to agree on the fair rent ’ftnth the approval of the Inspector of Factories.

Another amendment excluded from the operation of the act dwellinghouses disposed of under an approved housing scheme embracing the letting of houses on leases containing compulsory or optional purchasing clauses.

An amendment was also moved enabling a landlord to obtain possession of a dwelling if he required it for the use of a person in his regular employment, and a further amendment empowered a magistrate to give a landlord leave to distrain for rent without the necessity of giving notice to the tenant.

The Hon. W. Perry moved that the act should not apply where the weekly rental exceeded £3.

All the amendments were agreed to and the bill passed. The Distress and Replevin Amendment Bill was also passed.
