WINTER MEETING

The Ashburton Racing Club’s winter meeting, held on Saturday in ideal weather, attracted a large crowd of Mid-Canterbury racing enthusiasts. Warm tweeds, with brown as the predominating colour, were the most favoured materials for suits or coats. Small hats of felt to match suits or ensembles were brightened with quills or motifs. Bright music was supplied by the Ashburton Silver Band. Among those present were Mrs J. H. Grigg, who wore a brown checked suit, dark brown tarn hat, fox stole. Mrs A. N. Grigg, myrtle green ensemble with three-quarter length coat, green felt hat. Mrs C. G. C. Harper, royal blue tailored suit, royal blue velour hat with lighter blue winged mount, fur stole. Mrs E. W. Roberts, tailored flecked tweed suit, *dark brown velour hat, fur stole. Mrs A. S. Elworthy (South Canterbury), fawn fitting coat with darker fur collar, Breton sailor felt hat with contrasting band. Mrs G. Gould (Christchurch), blue suit, velour hat to tone, fur stole. Mrs - J. Sinclair-Thomson (South Canterbury), tailored tweed coat in brown and fawn tonings, dark brown panne velvet tarn hat. Mrs Sykes (Pigeon Bay), fawn tweed suit, hip-length fur coat, brown velour hat. Mrs P. H. N. Freeth (Christchurch), wine frock, felt hat to one, fur coat. Mrs F. Seldon, nigger brown teddy coat, dark brown velour shovel hat. Mrs R. Kennedy, belted suit of tweed with dark brown trimmings, dark brown felt hat. Mrs J. Sinclair, camel brown tailored suit, felt hat to match. Mrs A. J. Mason, blue grey and black flecked tweed frock, relieved with plain blue, blue felt hat. Mrs M. Newton, nigger brown tweed suit, nigger brown felt hat. Miss J. Woods, green frock, musquash fur coat, green halo hat. COMING-OF-AGE PARTY Mr and Mrs D. Boyd (Radcliffe road) entertained a number of friends of their eldest daughter, Violet, to celebrate her coming-of-age. The time was spent in games, competitions, and musical items. Music was supplied by Misses D. Blackburn, Mavis and Doris Boyd, and Mr Keith Harris. Competitions were won bf Misses Rhbna Wilson, Doreen Blackburn, Messrs J. Markwick and Keith Harris. Those present were Mr and Mrs D. Boyd, Mrs Crawford, sen. (Belfast), Mrs T. Marten.
