DOMINION’S CITIES AND TOWNS
THE OFFICIAL GRADING
POPULATION GRfWTH IN LAST DECADE
An amplification of t&o grading of citiea and towns in the Dominion, according to the preliminsftry Census returns, published in the “Post” last week, is contained in the Abstract of Statistics for May, The comment is made that the inter-censal increase of 10.95 per cent, for the Now Zealand population other than Maori represents the lowest rate of growth recorded for any decade in the country’s history, contrasting sharply with the gain of 10.69 per cent, for the five, years between the censuses of 1921 and 1926. Maori population in the 10 years increased at the remarkably high rate of 28.43 per cent, thus confirming the views derived from vital statistics records in recent years that the naturalincrease ratio of the Maori has become considerably hi,sier than the natural-increase ratio for the population of European descent. The following figures, apart from the grading of the 14 urban arehs, give the order of all towns of a population of 2000 or more, excluding. those boroughs which are part of the urban areas of large centres;—
